boost related coolant loss

I have a 93 r1(rebuilt 4000 miles ago) runninng 7psi and leaking coolant seemingly only when boosting. Both seem to be coming from the engine side of the turbos. I'm trying to narrow the possibilities down before I take everything apart. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Turbo coolant hoses are my bet. But it's should not be related to boosting, since the coolant system should be held at a constant pressure by the coolant filler cap. Another possibility is leaks between the hard pipes and the turbos. To fix that you'd need to buy new copper washers and replace them.

A minor leak by the copper washer is not a major problem unless it leaks and collects on a hot surface, which is a fire risk. A hose leak is a major problem, since the hose is usually on the brink of bursting, and significant coolant loss becomes overheated engine damage very quickly.

One thing is for sure - if you don't know when those 2 hoses were last replaced, have new ones on hand when you get in there and replace them. As well, don't drive the car until it's been fixed. Give Ray at Malloy a call - he'll have those hoses coming your way in a hurry.

Only use the Mazda hoses, IMO.

What hardpipes r u talking about one the turbos? Do u have any pics of them. I think I might be having that problem now. Its wierd though...I have new turbos (99 j-spec) Although I do have about 50,000 miles or so on them. R the hard pipes connected to the coolant hoses and do u have to take the urbo off to replace them? I dont meant to hijak the thread but this coolant problem is driving me nuts. I replace the turbo coolant hoses twice and replaced the claps with screw types the second time and now I know for sure its not that. I just want this thing fixed.

The hard pipes connect the turbos to the coolant hoses. You must remove the turbos to detach the hard pipes.

Did you have significant crusty stuff on the hard pipes where the hoses attach? If so, make sure there is a pretty clean surface for the hose to be clamped onto. I hope you didn't pitch the extra good set of coolant hoses - they are probably fine.

If it's the hard pipes, there are copper crush washers that hold them on. I *think* that 10mm banjo bolts are the attachment to the housing. If you can borrow a coolant pressure tester from Autozone, you might try removing the intake pipes and turbo heat shields so that you have a good look at the hard pipes. Then pressurize it at the AST and start looking for leaks. Or just buy all new crush washers and replace them.

edit: you can see the hoses again, including the top hard pipe, in this picture.
