Boost level

Ok so i just bought my rx7 like i told you guys in previous post. Just repeating myself in case you didn't read them. And the original owner took out the manual boost controllers because he said with them it was pushing 16psi. With them out it goes to about 14 psi. I have an aftermarket boost gauge btw. So what i want to know is how high can my boost be within safe limits? He said you don't really want to be over 14psi cuz it will eff your engine if you are. I dont know too much about this sort of thing and im trying to learn so bear with me.

What kind of ECU is in the car?

If it is a stock ECU you don't want to go over 10psi.

If it is a reflash of the stock ECU i wouldn't go over 12. If its a stand alone ECU (power FC, Haltech, microtec, motec) with a custom tune then you could get 14 or 16psi out of it. Without knowing how the car is set up it's really hard to say what is safe.

Do you have any other information you have on what is in the car, fuel system, intake, exhaust, single turbo or twin.

It really sux cuz the guy that sold it to me didn't really give me much info about the car. I wanted like a print out of all the modding and things done to it but he traded it to a dealership like a week before i bought it so i had to go through them. And let me tell you they were morons. kinda pissed at them i mean the didn't know anything about the car the guy test drove it and burned the clutch pretty good and then they left a freaking screw driver stuck in the wiper so when i tested the wipers the motor stuck and wouldn't work till i found out there was a damn screwdriver wedged in there. but i'm done whining.

You might be better off taking it to a rotary specialist shop and have it looked over and find out what you have there. I like to air on the side of caution and i wouldn't boost over 10psi stock for FD until you figure out what all you have.

Even still I would purchase a wideband to see where you are at as far as fuel.

it's a sensor/gauge combo that allows you to view your o2 readings real time showing you if you are running lean or rich. Short answer, i'm sure if you looked it up you'd get a lot more info on it.

There are many different kinds, it all depends on your price range. If you just want to take a look at some cool mods for your new RX-7 I would start by checking out RX-7.net, they have a lot of RX-7 parts to choose from. Also, keep your eye one the Parts threads in the 3rd Gen. section, you can find a lot of good lightly used or even brand new parts for cheap sometimes.

Good luck!

yes they are pricey. I have a PLX devices wideband with a DM-100 screen/gauge. Its rather fancy but it's accurate. But it cost just a little more than the average WB so I got it. It was about $400 total.

hrmm cool. Thanks a bunch really helpful info. Also yesterdeay i opened the side panel and looked at my ECU. I also have the stock one in a box in my house, but anyways...They look exactly the same?? same colors except the one IN my car has no barcodes or numbers to identify it. Its almost like he just replaced the stock ECU for another stock ECU. Which makes no sense to me. But correct me if im wrong cuz i very well could be but isnt the stock ECU supposed to not allow you to boost more than 10psi?

Did you look at all sides of the ecu to see if you could find any extra ports, or branding on it? Yes the stock one will fuel cut over 10 psi.

Absolutely too much boost.

When you remove the boost controllers it should come down to 8psi or so. Make sure the extra nipple on each actuator is capped off and is not leaking. Make sure the lines between the turbo and actuators are free of leaks. Open the boost controllers up all the way. Get the boost control working before worrying about anything else.
