Question Boost Leak or Cheap Bastard Intake?

Hi all.

I have recently been battling a boost leak. At first, I thought that it was just that the lower end of the crossover pipe coupler was not tight enough allowing it to pop up under around 7 lbs of boost

I don't get to drive the car as much as I'd like anymore so it had been that way for awhile. I finally had a chance to tighten that pipe up. I definitely get more boost and I'm now doing about a high 9/10 -high 7/8- high 9/10. I remember previously doing around an 11-9-11, and it seemed a tad more solid. The discrepancy, though, is that I did this yesterday in high 90 degree Texas heat and that previous boost pattern was probably in high 70 degree weather.

The other thing, though, is that I have Adam C's Cheap Bastard Intake, and even after tighting the pipe I still hear a loud wooshing sound now coming on around 5 lbs even though boost will still climb. I think I remember that I used to hear a wooshing sound like that...but it's been so long since I was running exactly right, I can't remember if this is the exact volume and duration.

Can someone with the Cheap Bastard Intake (or other experienced folks) chime in and tell me what they think? I realize that this is hard to diagnose over the Internet.

Thanks in advance,
Jesse

Doh!

I think that I've been reading sites like fd3s.net wrong. I was assuming that the crossover pipe itself was normally the culprit for boost leaks, but on closer inspection, it sounds like the coupler for the Y-Pipe/crossover tube can also be a problem child.

The tube was definitely popping loose under boost. I tightened the clamps on the coupler (which made a big difference), but I failed to inspect the coupler itself. Now I'm about 1lb off of where I think I should be. Does that sound about right for a split coupler?

I've got an Efini Pipe on the way. Hope this fixes it (but of course I won't stop thinking about it until I get it fixed).

Thanks.

I wouldn't worrry about it. If there is a problem with the pipe, or coupler, it will be resolved by installing the efini pipe.

If I can think of anyone experienced with the Cheap Bastard Intake, I will let you know Sounds like it is doing what it is supposed to do. It will be a little louder (at low speeds) than a closed box, but won't make any wooshing sound.

^ bump im having the same problem. its the crossover pipe slipping off the coupler. i think its a combination of the oil vapor lubing the connection and eventually slipping it up over time
