Blower motor misbehaving...searched

So, I've done my fair share of searching, and I can't find anything that mimics this exact problem. Car running the stock ECU.

With the blower motor on settings 1, 2, and three, and the AC button/light *ON* the blower motor does not function/activate. Nothing whatsoever.

Now, when I turn it to setting 4, the AC LIGHT shuts *OFF* (button still pushed in) and the blower itself finally turns on.....Can anyone make sense of this? Possibly the blower resistor?

Do you have a Power FC?

No, I do not. I should have included that in my earlier post, as I did see numerous threads dictating the power fc and factory AC controls not getting along.

Its entirely stock. I haven't seen any other threads reflect how its behaving in my case, though.

Edit: Initial post updated for clarification.

It's the blower motor resistor. I had the same thing happen to my car ages back.

The resistor drops the voltage that the fan sees so it can change the speed. Speed 4 is straight 12v and bypasses the resistor. If the resistor is bad speeds 1-3 will not work, no fan at all.

I bought it new from Mazda, but this was probably 12 years ago. Not sure on pricing or availability.

Should be readily available for $40-$50 from the typical aftermarket brands. I replaced mine a few months ago.

Thanks Dale, I appreciate the clarification. Looks like that is what I'll be doing! Also, when you pulled yours out, did you notice any carpet/hair on it? Mine had some carpet fuzz on it. I cleaned it off with isopropyl alcohol, no dice, so It's going to need a replacement. One thing I'm curious about, though, Why would the AC light remain illuminated on settings 1-3, but suddenly turn off when put to four? I assume the resistor is to blame for that as well?

Not sure on the AC light, but fix the obvious problem first then go forward.

Can't remember if mine had anything on it, again that was AGES ago. It's a wear item, it's a resistor that gets really hot, that's why it's in the air stream from the fan. Over time I think it just burns up.
