IF tuned correctly the apex seals will last many many miles. ,if tuned badly they will last untill the motor develops a( one good hard ) spark knock. The water seals will last for a long time unless the motor over heats or run hot continually and the seals get burned ,brittle and deform . Change the oil often and all is well , if not any motor will wear out before its time. These motors will last if run correctly, but that is the hard part. Side note, people work on these cars and replace motors, when they go bad everone blames the motor builder . Judge from the questions asked here and one must wonder just how good of a mechanic some people are? The fun and pride comes in learning . The education comes at a high cost, in time and money .

Newbies/Others Please use search / Useful Links

It's right at the top of this forum. Did you even bother reading anything before you posted?

To be simplistic, there are several factors that often hurt these engines quite badly. They create a LOT of heat which the cooling system is not always able to properly compensate for. They've got a very complicated sequential twin turbo (well, stock ) system which allows for numerous potential fuel and turbo-lubrication problems. Finally, and probably most importantly, they're twin turbo rotaries. They perform very well even in stock form, and far too often this leads to abuse. People drive the car hard because it's fun, but don't understand the care they need. The inaccurate water temp gauge definitely doesn't help...

Like you said, engine problems are very common for Rx7s. This forum's been around for a long time. That being the case, just about every problem you could ever imagine has been discussed ad nauseum. Take time to do a few searches, and read the first two links provided in the first post of the thread I linked you to.

That 70K mile figure is totally bogus. Mine was 52K.

Engines last for as long as they are treated well. There is no magical "engine needs to be replaced" mileage number.

Check the following thread:

That will get you started on your FD search.
