black smoke and poor idle on fd

Hi guys,

Just bought my second fd. My first FD was completely factory and never had any problems.... have now bought my second and am worried. It is basicly stock, few simple mods like exhaust.

Previous owner removed emissions set up... well i guess simplified the rats nest, now ive read threads on that if you remove you need to live in certain states where they have no emissions laws etc.... is this because when they are removed it will run rich?? Would you expect it to blow a bit of smoke and run rich? Would this explain why my car sounds like its slightly bridge ported or has it been done wrong or possibly something different all together??

Is it ok to run like this on standard ECU?

Any help please would be great as i am finding it difficult to understand the explanations i have read up.

Thank you.

Other than the smoke and rough idle can you drive the car, does it perform ok?

The car might be in limp mode because of all the check engine codes due to all of the removed emissions equipment. You need an aftermarket ECU to be able to remove all of the emissions equipment. IIRC, when the air pump is removed that will cause the car to go into limp mode. Do a search of limp mode and pull the engine codes.

Make sure you the fuel temp sensor and coolant sensor aren't switched. Both are green connectors and people often get them confused. Of course check the map sensor as others have suggested.

Im guessing the map sensor is the one saying boost sensor on it? if so, i pulled pipe of to see if maybe it had fallen off at the end i couldnt see, dont think it was that because car stalled when i did this.

Car is driveable and performs awesome, super quick, at 1500rpms it sounds like a bridgeport but it normally idles around 800 and doesnt sounds so great.

Yes airpump removed, i cant find much about limp mode.

Another thing that may help to explain the problem is that if you are just cruising around about 3000rpm the turbos are very loud like they are spooling but im not accelerating, sounds like the noise is coming from intake.

Car had no issues starting, just idle and black smoke looks awful!!

Thank you all so much for the help! any other possible explanations would be much appreciated.

Dan
