Smile Bits of Apex Seal in Turbos

A followup on a thread I started back in May, when my newly purchased FD with a blown motor was disassembled.

After I pulled the motor and stripped off the Turbo manifold I noticed bits of apex seal in the ports to the Turbos. Obviously some must have gone through, the engine was being taxed by a car dealer looking at it for trade in I am told. I questioned whether this would damage the Turbos. After a careful inspection I could find no damage, the thread concensis was that the turbos would be toast. I decided against a rebuild until I proofed them with my new engine, installed at the end of July. In August I carefuled broke in my 3mm / Hurley engine and found that the primary put out 10psi (4000 limit during breakin). After breakin was finished I did the big test with the secondary and the units performed perfectly - 10-8-10 .

So if you blow your engine and apex seal is flying everwhere all may not be lost as far as the Turbos are concerned.
