Biggest tires on stock rims

Iam about to put some nitto 555 drags radials on the back, and was wondering how wide and big can I go on the stock rims.
255/45?

thanks

I would think that would be ok since I have 245/45's which fit easily. Although you would want a smaller diameter tire for drag racing (given you have enough width for traction). A smaller tire has the effect of increasing your gear ratio...

245/45/16 will fit in the back, but not front. Front will rub.

I run 245/45 for open track events and 255/50 at the strip on stock rims and stock suspension. No problems and nothing rubs.

Ummm...I just got a pair of Yokohama A032R's and they were 255/50 R16.......wow, they were huge!!! The local tire shop wouldn't even mount them because they said that they would rub....so I sent it back and got some 245/45's instead which is the biggest size Mazda recommends...

245/45/16 is a good size for stock wheels. 225/50/16 is stock size. When looking at tire sizes just remeber this. The first # is the width. The second # is the aspect ratio( side wall height) which is a percentage of the width. So with that in mind, a 225 50 will not be the same height as a 245 50 because the aspect ratio would actually make the tire taller on the 245 50. So adding width you actually need to go down on the aspect ratio to keep the over all diameter of the tire the same as stock. This is for gearing and speedo changes as well as fitment.
