Best Synthetic Oil

Please don't post about the mineral vs. synthetic. What is the best synthetic oil? Is the extra price for royal purple justifed? Does anyone have any test data? No opinions please. I'm looking for empirical evidence.

It is more about the weight of the oil than what kind of synthetic oil it is.

This thread is weak! Are you aware that most of the oils claiming to be synthetic are not even synthetic? Mobil 1 is true synthetic. If thats not good enough go get some royal purple.

sorry, geez! I ran mobil 15-50 and it rocked. Then they went nuts with some crazy new add campaign and I switched to valvoline VR1 and love that too but it's not synthetic. Thats as empirical as I can get.

Never heard of Idemitsu oil? Don’t be too surprised. After 90 years, Idemitsu has just made itself available to the American public. Here are a few things you probably didn’t know:

• Largest Japanese oil manufacturer in the world.
• Exclusive supplier to all Japanese OEMs.
• Largest producer of custom blended oils.
• Supplier of custom competition blended oils for Mazda’s racing efforts.

What does this mean to us Rotarians? Now we can use the oils that is based on technology that helped Mazda win the 24 hours of LeMans. Nothing speaks better for oil’s effectiveness than the ability to survive that extreme punishment. We’ve tested this oil in both of our race cars. Our world famous RX7.COM “Stars and Stripes” championship winning car puts severe stresses on the engine bearings. We’ve never had any problems whatsoever with Idemitsu oils. Being turbocharged and nitrous-fed, there is no harder test for an oil. In addition, Ken Scheepers has relied on Idemitsu oils to keep his RX7.COM sponsored All-Motor engine together. Now that you know the name, buy a few bottles, your engine will thank you.

Viscosity recommendations:
- 10W30 for all-motor rotaries
- 20W50 for all turbo applications
- Premix is for all rotary applications

No offense, but I see that as mostly marketing talk. Here's RP's spiel:
http://www.royalpurple.com/techa/faqsa.html#re1

I don't think you can go wrong with a major brand of syn oil. I seriously doubt that there's going to be a huge difference performance-wise between them. I use RP because my friends recommended it and there's a distributor just down the street from me.

To the thread creator: I don't think you'll find the "empirical" info you're looking for here, just alot of opinions. If there's some test comparing various syn oils, it's probably somewhere else on the web. I might have something already bookmarked, I'll check. Good luck in your search!

I think a better question would be who has an OMP and still premixes.

EDIT:
After a bit of searching, the only comparison tests between syn oils I could find were from a couple of Amsoil sites:
http://www.worldsbestoil.ca/dyno-test.php

Looks like the test was done by Fast Fours & Rotaries (FFR) an Australian mag.
Anyone have any opinion on this?

No offense taken

The above quote is why I am using the idemitsu......it was designed specifically for rotary engines and the oil metering injection system.

Mobil 1 is good enough for me as a daily driver... Synthetic lasts longer than regular oil because of its molecular structure. However always change your oil at 3000-5000 miles.

I once spoke with the Tech Services Manager at Royal Purple. He's a real rotorhead with a street FD and he's building an FD-based GT3 car.

He claims that pitched to Jim of RP about their engine oil, and they did a stand dyno tests using an NA rotary race engine, and found the RP picked up a few hp over all the others. If you want to contact him yourself, PM me and I'll pass along his info.

Whether there is significance or relevance to the test I won't comment - but it seems like the kind of data point you are looking for. IMO, good full synthetics do basically the same excellent job. I use Mobil1 in all my cars since I can get it for $21/5qts at Wal-mart.

Unfortunately, you won't find any "empirical evidence" on what is the "best synthetic oil" because there are way too many variables involved with the performance aspects of motor oil. Any proper scientific test that is used to determine "empirical evidence" ends up with results that are too specific in nature to be used as the basis for any conclusion on the overall performance of a motor oil. Of course, that doesn't stop the marketing people from using such "tests" as the foundation of their claims that their company's motor oil is the "best"...

Ive gone through a wide variety of synthetics. Currently Im on Amsoil. You know what, they all suffer horrible fuel dillution way before signs of which lasts longer/is more effective ever takes place. Castrol was a bad choice. Not gonna run that again. Mobil 1, Royal Purple, and Amsoil have all been good choices.

To all those that answered intelligently, thank you. I am going to see if my University has any means to aid me in my search, but unfortunately I'm at a crappy state funded school. Mr3plus1, what happened with the Castrol if you don't mind me asking?
