best replacement for stock antenna

best replacement for stock antenna
OK so far the replacement mast for the antenna from a couple of dealers is over 50 dollars. So replacement of the whole thing seems to make more sense... There are a lot of antennas on ebay and elsewhere. Which brand (if any) is better quality and has the best fit and (maybe) the same connector?

call Malloy Mazda and see what their price is, if you haven't already done so.
703-490-8170
they have wonderful prices (lower than any dealer i've ever dealt with on OEM FD parts), didn't know if you were aware of this at all.

this is absolutely wrong.. My mast broke and no longer went up, therefore I got shitty FM reception( still do since I never fixed it), almost nothing at all. Now if you live close to a station, you'll still get some reception.

This is the thread that i got my information from
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hlight=antenna
and i'm pretty sure that in the body electrical manual, there is a diagram of the rear of the car labelling the same thing. Could be making that up though, can't download the pdf files at work.

There are two antennas, one in the top of the rear glass, the other on the rear fender. They both do AM and FM, though the glass part wouldn't pick up much AM - it's too small. Its' purpose is "diversity" reception. With FM you get "standing waves" (signal varies from almost 0 to great as you move a metre or two). It's caused by reflections adding and subtracting from the direct signal. So if you have two antennas and a receiver that can use them, you space them the appropriate distance apart so when one antenna is at the "0 signal" position, the other is not - and you don't have serious fading as you move - with FM only.
I removed the stock system as it was getting old and tired, and installed a new Alpine unit. I use the stock fender antenna AM and FM and it works just fine. Though I admit I'm usually driving and NOT listening to the radio.

Going to give this thread a bump.
I'd be without the mast antenna as it was snapped and just sitting in the hole on the rear fender.
I finally got around to replacing last weekend (cheap part) < 1hr of work, and its a 10x improvment on FM receptions. I also have an aftermarket alpine head unit, so Beale is right, you need both for decent fm reception.
