Thumbs up Best FD to Buy.

Kind of an ambiguous question, but here goes. I know the 93's had some coating problems somewhat o the dash or maybe it's just a rumour. In any case, I prolly wanna go with a 94 or 95 since they are more rare. The Touring seems to attract me more because of the moonroof/sunroof even though it weighs some 80lbs more. For starters, I was wondering what the difference between the Touring and R series were? Also once I dtermine the specific year and model type, I was wondering if you guys were in the sane position to buy your FD's again, would you rather buy a high mileage one and get it rebuilt? or drop a engine? Or would you buy a low mileage one? Buying a modded one is completely outta the question. That's half the fun ! Stock will eb the way to go. Thanks guys!

You can read about the differences here:

Me? I wanted a sunroof more than an upgraded suspension, since you can always upgrade the suspension yourself.

As far as what to look for, it depends on your situation. If you have a second car that you can drive, I would look for one with a blown engine. Get it cheap, have the engine rebuilt and turn it into a project car. If the RX-7 will be your only car, then you'll have to look for one in good condition. That could make things more difficult in locating one.

As far as what to get as far as a year, if you can find a 95 or 94, sure, but don't skip on a 93 just because it's a 93. The main two problems with a 93 is the exterior paint and the interior panels. The interior can be done with a little time on your own, however the paint job might cost a bit unless you can do that yourself.

94-95 PEP

I bought a 94 PEP(popular equipment package)and it has all the things that i wanted. It has leather and a sunroof but no bose or spoiler or rear window wiper. I wanted white also so i couldnt get a R2 but thats no big deal to me. I just did suspension upgrades which most R owners do also. This might be the right package for you, I dont know if u want the bose system or not this comes in touring only. If you plan on puttin anything in your trunk you wouldnt want the bose cause it just about fills the trunk. Well i hope i have been helpfull in some way.

I have the 93 touring and love it. I think most people with the r model say the same thing though. Me...I'd go with whatever car you can find in very nice shape overall. Inside the car does get hot as hell so the moonroof is very nice. also ac takes some power away and hurts the gas a lot. I think it looks beter w/o the moonroof though. Also if I were to do it over I would start with a $6k car with out an engine. But thats a big project.

I would ignore specific models and look at your money and decide how you can use it to end up with an FD in the best possible condition that you can afford.

Maybe you can find one with a blown engine in otherwise good condition cheap enough to apply the rest of the money to a stout rebuild and reliabilty mods or other issues.

Even if you are hardcore performance, I think you're better to get a Touring that fares better in a prepurchse inspection than an R model.

There are many things to consider, but there are several ways to come up with a good car which is really what we are after.

Extremely immacualte points you all made! I'm still deciding on the amount but for sure it will eb no more than 20K total for everything no matter what I do (or at least that's what I would rather keep it under). In any case, one can learn only so much about rotary's by reading books and searching the net. It's hands-on expereince that really helps. With that said, I'll rpllly get this car beginning of Summer this year which leaves some time to look. No matter what kind I get (low mileage: learn about rotary through inspection or high mileage: get a rebuild) it won't matter cause for the first time, I'll have a performance shop do it. Prolly KARotary since they close to me in SoCal . Good luck to me I guess and any other comments are welcomed.
