Sylvania 9003 Silver Star

I just purchased a pair of the Sylvania Silver Star 9003 from Advance Auto Parts in Baton Rouge. They were priced at $25/each but are "on sale" with the second bulb purchased at half off. Also Sylvania is offering a $10 rebate. I just installed them and they are definitely white compared to the stock bulbs. Will be out at night perhaps tomorrow and will let you know if it helps to see better at night.

I bought hella 130/90 from
rallylights.com

I notice a big difference when driving at night in the hills. I can not speak about how long they will last, I only drive my car once in a while on the weekends. So far, nothing has melted or burned out.

OK after two days of driving with the Sylvania Silver Stars, I can tell you they don't help when the roads are wet. However, there is a great difference at night on dry highways. Not as good as Xenon's would be but far far better than the stock Mazda bulbs. Very pleased with my purchase of the 9003 ST's. I am 54 and night vision is probably not what it used to be so these lights are really appreciated. They are the same wattage as the stock bulbs also.

I'm not sure that there is a bulb that can fix the night driving/wet road thing. They just aren't bright enough. I've had upgraded Sylvania's, and they were exactly as you say. I have PIAA's now, and they're great, but they're still not bright enough in the rain. You might try that thing that boosts your headlight voltage. You can see adds in SPC magazine.

There was a thread on this in the interior/exterior section.

the higher wattage bulbs only last a few months.
I was going to get a cheaper set from summit racing for 1/2 the price of the PIAA's but it was raining and I wanted them right away. I've had PIAA's on my Honda and they've lasted close to two years now.

It doesn't seem to be a huge difference untill you switch back to stock and that's when you notice. No bulb will be as good as a zenon HID but I tried the new PIAA Super Plasga GT HID (135/125-60/55) and they are excellent. Not as bright as a higher wattage bulb but the purest white of any car i've seen except the new BMW's. The real test would have been at night in the rain on the freeway but it stopped raining.

I also replaced the fog light bulbs with ion crystal (Amber). I can't even tell if they are on now. BEfore I could see them turn on, not that they helped any but I could tell when I switched them on but now the headlamps over power them too much even though they are higher wattage (55W before 35W).

I'm thinking about getting a set of CATZ Galazy White bulbs.
I have a set on my bike right now and they're bright.
But I'll just wait until the stock bulbs go before I spend money on that.
I don't do all that much night driving anyways.

Well, I'll just comment here like I have in the other threads about this in the past.

I installed the SilverStars and notice a BIG difference. The beam lights up at least 2 more full "yellow lines" ahead, and has better side illumination. You can see the ******* owls in the trees!

I had to purchase mine direct from Sylvania, but it looks like they are becoming more and more available.

I second a lot of the earlier opinions on the higher wattage bulbs....avoid them. I bought a set for my Audi and just flat MELTED the wiring harness, bulb plugs...the whole nine yards!

Try the SilverStars....I think you'll like them.

At a 5000k rating, the PIAA plasma GT is a much brighter, whiter light than the Sylvania at 4100k but at 1/3 more the cost. The PIAA has the same color intensity rating as HID but lacks the higher wattage output.

like my pic?

Hey ... that pic is from my post in the for sale section!

I can't say that these lights equal the HID on the 2001 Acura CL-S I used to own, but they are much better than the stock lamps. The stocks put out a light that looks to be an old shade of yellow next to the Silverstars.

Man am I glad I ditched the Acura for the FD ... no comparison ... what was I thinking

Well i got the silver stars in tonight and hit the road.
Man what a difference they bulbs make, Like driving a different car. on high beam these really reach out and as said before the side lighting is excellent too. This is by far the best money i have spent on my car. Bang for the buck is all i can say. Do yourself a favor and buy these lights.

I did notice on the paper work that comes with the light it makes no mention of the 9003, just 9004 , 5, 6, 7, so they must be pretty new.

RMS sells a Tenzo brand rated at 3900k. It says it has a blue tint. Those are priced at 1/2 the Sylvania or 1/3 the PIAA's. Oh, the Sylvanias are rated at 4000k and not 4100k (my mistype). The PIAA's are rated at 5000k, the same as high end HID's.

You won't get more power from any of these. The best way to describe the difference is two flashlights and the flashlight with almost dead batteries would be similar to stock H4 bulbs.

My PIAA bulbs are so daylike that I can not see the Amber fog light color on the road and can't tell when they are on.

I too have use these PIAA Platinum Super Whites 80/80 bulbs (infact I still have them in my FD) but they stuck *** to Mtec lights (yes, they actually shine orange compared to the Mtec lights). These are the closest to HID I have ever seen although you will notice the difference when you put them next to each other (although its only a slight distance). Only bad thing (if you can call it a bad thing) is that they run at 130 watts. My brother has these on his car and has been running them for about 8-9 months with nothing melting or anything like that. The best thing about Mtec lights are they only run about 25-35 bucks for a pair compared to the 100 bucks I shelled out for my crappy *** PIAA's.

BTW: The Mtec lights are not that blue (although they have just a hint of blue). They are more really bright white

In anycase, I'am in no way a reseller or connected to the manufactures of these lights, I'm just relaying my experience with these lights. If you do choose to test these lights out, they are only about 25-35 bucks like I said so its not gonna bankrupt you

Good luck

P.S. Even with HID, the light pattern will still suck ***, (I know because my friend has HID's in his stock lamps.)

My car came with the PIAA 80/80 but the Super Plasma GT's blow them away in clarity. I still have one of those 80/80 bulbs, the other burned out. I've never seen them sold by the single and forgot I had a good one. The PIAA's are expensive but will last if you don't touch the bulb. If your happy with $25 bulbs, cool they are still better than stock.

The Belloff HID's have both low & hi beam and are about $1000. I have not seen them in person, just a pic on takakaira.

btw: What duh heckle & jeckle is a mtec light?
