Best bang for $ Stock Tires

Guys I'm looking to put some decent tires on my FD at a great price.

I need the stock 225/50/16. I was looking for used tires in the for sale section as I don't want to spend a ton. I may be upgrading wheels and want these to hold me over.

Can anyone suggest a decent brand with great price? Or a place to perhaps pick up some used tires?

Thanks

We have had great service from a set of Bridgestone Turanza LS-V 225/50R16 tires ("with UNI-T AQII") bought at 80,614 miles in June 2004. Mileage now is 111K, tires show very little wear, run quietly, hold pressure, and stick well. Price in 2004 was $214.99 each. (The previous Dunlops were quite noisy and did not ride as well.)

I just recently purchased some tires for my stock wheels and I was in the same boat as you. I finally decided on the Potenza Re11a tires. With extensive research, I came to the conclusion that these tires were one of the best out there at the moment. I noticed that Bridgestone was having a promotion " $70 visa card if you buy 4 tires" so I called up America's Tire and not only did they quote me the best price of $116/tire (they even beat online pricing) plus I got $70 back. Final total after rebate was $580 . This includes tax, disposal fee, lifetime rotate AND Refund, replacement if damaged.

I'll just throw this out....
You can also run 245/45/16 easily on the stock 8" wheel. With that size the speedometer is unaffected and it requires no modification of anything. I ran them for several years until they became, apparently, an obsolete size. But now they seem to making somewhat of a comeback. I just checked and Toyo Proxes T1R's are available @ $118 each from Tirerack. High Performance Summer with a 280 wear rating. Not bad IMO. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

It depends a bit on how you define a great tire, but...how about the Bridgestone RE760?
They have a 340 treadwear - decent lifetime - and about $100 ea at tire rack.
I tend to like better performance at the cost of lower life, but these are pretty decent handling.

Speaking of the 245s, I just ordered a set of the Toyo T1R's from TireRack over the weekend and they arrived yesterday! Can't wait to put them on, they are definitely the bang for the buck tires in my opinion.

ArmAnirx7 scored a great deal too, as the Bridgestone Potenza RE11's were my second choice since the price was higher. I would have bought the Bridgestones if I got his price.

Bridgestone RE760. I got a set a year ago, have put 4,000 miles on them. They are quiet and comfortable, and very good grip. I have limited wet road driving as I try to avoid driving in the rain, but these tires do work well in the rain. I live in the mountains of North Carolina and drive my car very hard. (At the right time & place... ie when it's safe)When you get to the limit of grip, they slide predictably. To add some "street cred." I'm a SCCA club racer with a few race wins and some local autoX wins.

I also purchased 245/45/16 on my stock wheels and they fit amazing with the extra width tire for daily and autocross. Though I went the high route and got Bridgestone RE-11

I really like my original Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec. Now, of course, they don't make them any more, but the Z2 is available at Tirerack for $124 per tire in the 225/50-16 size.

Hey Op,

For what you want to do it sounds like you just want decent tires for a good price until you get your rims. The tires we are all talking about are performance tires. Look into the Achilles ATR sport. they have good ratings and I personally have them on my Protege5 and they are good tires for the price. These should do the trick for you until you get your new rims.

BFG Sport Comp-2 , 455$ out the door installed price from discountire.com

"Caveats firmly in place, the COMP-2s are excellent, precise-handling tires for the aggressive driver, and offer a ton of confidence in the wet. Their treadwear number is 340, and they're offered in 46 sizes (with 12 more available come September 2012) in diameters ranging from 15 to 20 in."

I ran the BFG Sport Comps. The treadwear rating was a bit optimistic, but still a very good tire value.

I had those same tires on my EP3 Si, they were great, so much dry and even wet traction and they wore well. They would flat spot in the colder winter temps but otherwise I would buy them again.

My FD came with brand new Hankook Ventus V12 Evos in the stock size. PO bought them from Tirerack on clearance for $56ea!!! last fall.
