The best balance of power and performance

As the title states, I have always wondered what would be the best power/performance balance for the FD.
I know there are cars out there with >500WHP, but how useful is that when you are not going in a straight line? Power for our car comes at a cost in the form of lag (unless you do a 3 rotor or V8 swap), you have to keep the revs above 5000 rpms for cars producing more than 500WHP to get any of the power benefit.
Is there such a thing as too much power?

350 rwhp is about the limit for streetable, *reliable* dependable horsepower on a boosted 13B. Ari and Chris over at RP have always said this without hesitation when I asked them over the years, and based on my own experiences it seems about right.

I think my car is pushing around 290 whp right now and it routinely scares the sh*t out of me. I think even at around 300 whp, you are starting to push the envelope with 91 octane gas that many of us get now.

I've got 380rwhp and its fast as hell but i'd still like a little more. I want to be in the range of 400-435rwhp but that will have to wait till i get a ported motor and turn the boost up a little bit.

With a 13B, 350-400 rwhp is really the limit of usable power, at least in anything but a pure straight line. Any setup making more power than this stops becoming usable exiting a turn/on a track.

People that run big laggy singles making 400+ rwhp aren't typically interested in balance or driving on a track, they are interested in winning highway races, drag racing, or bragging rights.

Does anyone have a relative comparison between a 380whp FD to other high performance cars. I'm curious to know where we are among the pecking order of sports cars.

Can a 380whp FD hang with Porsche twin turbo or Z06 or Vipers or other exotics?

I was running 360RWHP for about a year, and thought that was a very nice balance between power and "reliability". I never really had any issues with the car at this level.

Boost greed set in and I retuned. The car is now putting down 400RWHP. I do not think it is any more or less streetable, but I did manage to blow up the stock clutch at this power level.

I am going to go out on a limb, and say the less mods you do, aside from reliablity, the better off you will be in the long run. So, 260-280RWHP will yield a very nice streetable car, without a bunch of **** (more ****) that can wrong.

Please understand though, you've got a race car in not so "sheeps clothing". It is going to require a ton of maintence, and repair. Especially, if you drive it like it needs to be driven.

A 380 rwhp FD will spank the **** out of 911TTs, and will pull on Z06s and Vipers in a straight line.

Depending on how well the car is setup, a 380 rwhp will eat all of the above cars on the track.

2005 Saleen S7------------->4.63
2002 Ferrari Enzo----------->4.93
FD with 500whp------------>5.50
2005 Porsche Carrera GT---->5.92
FD with 380whp------------->7.24
2005 Z06------------------->7.36
2005 Lamborghini Murcielago->7.45
2005 Ford GT--------------->7.88
2005 Viper------------------>7.96
2005 BMW M6--------------->8.74
2005 Porsche Carrera S------>9.64

Isn't the FD also extremely aerodynamic?

Hey, maybe with some wide *** rims and some sticky rubber (and probably supsension so hard you can read the SCHOOL paint off of the road with your ***) it might actually corner as good as some of those cars

Yeah, right. Next time, try actually owning a car you are discussing. Then you might have a clue what you are talking about.

you figure with the drivetrain power loss figured into the mix, that 380hp would be about 447hp at the fly (imagine a from the factory fd with that hp figure, damn), so keeping up with stock zo6's and 911tt's shouldn't be a problem, u'll most likely surprise the hell out of them actually... even janapese tuners like Amemiya agree that 380hp is a great balance for the FD...
