Battery Problem?

I have two gel cel batteries hooked up in parrallel and I put them onthe charger tonight. For some reason one of the batteries is getting really hot and it does not look like they are charging correctly...any ideas?

They are wired in the interior with a center positive post under the hood.

I may be doing two PC680MJ's (in the future) in the rear storage bin. Don't those require a special trickle charger that's only 6amps?

I can't tell you much more than that one battery probably has less internal resistance than the other, or the cold one has a dirty connection. It could be due to a difference in age or "useage time" between the two, or just manufacturing variances.

Are you "quick" charging these suckers in parallel with some mega current? Be careful, there's no guarantee they're sharing the current 50/50. If you're using a "20A charge" as measured at the charger for example, you miay actually be giving one a 6A charge and the other a 14A... that can vary over charging time as well.

They are both the same batteies...I can not imagine too much difference in resistance...I am going to just charge each one individually

No, I wanted to see your custom yellow CF overlay. Sounds cool.

InsaneGideon,
makes good points, furthermore the state of charge may be different in each battery. I would charge them separately or at a real low rate. The internal resistance along with the external measure is a key to electrical flow. Being a tune up and drive-ability tech for the past 20+ years 99% of charging systems problems follow a similar diagnosis path but that 1% falls in to the more technical areas. There is one test I was taught in about 1980. This is the 3 minute charge test. When a battery tests good but your gut says its not do this one. Charge the battery at 20 amps or so and with a volt meter connected to the battery as it's being charged if within 3 minutes the voltage reaches 15.5 volts or as I do wait longer maybe up to 15 minutes this battery is skewed and should be replaced. My tune up teacher told me the quicker the battery takes a charge the faster it will discharge.
