Is it bad to leave a rotary undriven?
I've almost gotten my dad convinced to buy me an rx-7, only thing is, is that he says if you leave a rotary parked for a long time it is bad for the engine. I need to prove him wrong, so if anyone has any sites that could help me do this I'd appreciate this very much. If this is true, would the solution just be to crank the car and leave it running or would it need to be driven.
thanks guys,
-Chris.

"The RX-7 is not the right car for you", is what everyone will tell you. It needs to be driven, and driven hard. It needs to be driven by someone who has a respect for the car, for the engine, for the power. It *IS* bad for the engine, for ANY engine, to let it sit prolonged and expect it to hop right up and be perfect. There's a checklist of things I do every time I store the car. Read up about the car for another year, and get a "powerful" FWD car for that time. THEN you'll be ready.

thanks for the lecture mom... but I've done my research and I know a hell of a lot about the car. I don't plan on leaving the car undriven for too long, but when I go to college I don't think I'll be driving the car every single day. I just need some sources to prove to my dad that leaving the car undriven for a day or two isn't too bad for it.
Thanks

Even leaving it for a month or so shouldn't be too bad. But more than that I'd take some precaution before leaving it. Why not just let your dad drive it around a bit every weekend...after all he will be paying for it.

Yeah, your right Import, I wasn't trying to sound ungrateful, I'm a rich spoiled kid and all, but I still know how lucky I am he's buying my car.
thanks guys, and if any of you have a link to a website w/ this info on it I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
-Chris.

BTW, I agree with Import Convert, you might be nicer to your dad since he's just buying the car for you. Frankly, you sound like a spoiled brat.
Since you're so respectful of other people, here's a hint for the future:

guys, honestly, I have been respectful to the people that have shown me respect, the first guy jumps on my back by saying "The RX-7 is not the right car for you" off the bat, without even hearing me out. I have researched, I just figured since you guys already own these cars, you might have a few helpful sites. As far as being nice to my dad, I am, we have a great relationship, I am a rich spoiled kid but I'm not a brat. But I do understand why many of you would think that just because my dad is going to buy my car for me.

Hey I just told you what everyone else will. How old are you? Do you have the money to replace the engine when you get the craving for an extra pound or two of boost without the precautions? Will you sit down with the service manual for hours at a time just to figgure out what a weird little problem is? Will you have alternate transportation when you need to have the car up on stands for weeks at a time? I'm not saying everyone can answer 'yes' to those questions, but that is an idea of what you can be getting into. It's a lovely car, I love mine more than...well, money....but it truely takes a special breed to own it. I'm not putting you down at all. But part of the respect for the FD comes from the hard work you put into getting everything perfect, making sure it will last a long time, and sometimes paying for it yourself. I'm sure we'd all love to have had our parents buy it for us, but....well, i've said my peace.

Does your dad mean one or two days for the car to sit...or does he mean like a few months from when you are not home to drive it, providing you leave it at home. I don't know much about the fd, but just from what i've read, it is not a good first sports car or basically first car for anyone to own unless they have a backup car or tons of money to repair it constantly. I could afford an FD right now if i wanted to, but insurance and repairs would kill me. If you're like me and think the fd is amazing in just about everything, then wait a few years when you're pulling in the big bucks then your fd can be your toy.
I didn't buy my car either...and it's my first sports car (2nd overall car, had a '98 ford exploder sport)...if you thought the RX-7 is unreliable you haven't driven an explorer. But what I do have is great respect and cautiousness for the car. I didn't know **** about the rotary, and hadn't even heard of it until I started to weigh the RX-7 into my options, but the trick is to learn. For right now I wont even touch my car for repair until I see some guru work on it and show me what to do. One thing is that I live in an area that has some good rotary shops nearby (XS, SP, Rotary Power, RR&R, sorry if I missed anymore...). It's okay for you to own one if you take care of it and not drive it like it's a Supra or anything else. Tell your dad it's ok to leave it in the garage for days and days, but it's not okay to drive the **** out of it and then call it "unreliable" when it puts a dent in your wallet (which is a pretty big wallet apparently)

I'm not sure if its just my imagination, or what, but when I leave my car sitting for a week, the exhaust smells a bit more like fuel during warmup then if I drive it every 2-3 days. I also notice making sure to rev it up some when driving seems to make a difference in that area as well. But it does start and run fine...
Look all biast aside, I'am sure you don't care about the bad things of the car. I know that before I bought my rx7, I found out 2 days before hand that it was a rotary engine. Then I knew it was gonna be endless nigths searching this forum. My car is perfect. If anything is wrong with it its fixed with in the 1st days of the symptoms. If I cant fix it, then it wont be driven. Now I know a lot of things about this car. Mine sits from time to time because I have other transportation which is highly recommended. The sitting times at the longest would be a week because I have rx7 withdrawls and I have to have my fix. I have had no problems related to the car while letting it sit. I wouldnt recommend letting it sit for a LONG time. Just have your dad drive it for 10 minutes on the weekends(Im sure he wont mind). Just learn as much as you can and remeber guys we were all beginers at 1 time. Welcome to the forum kid! The sites that might be helpful are ones you will have to search for the right addy since Iam at work: Robinette, scurdeani, silverbullet, and www.iluvmyrx7.com.
And yes those spellings WILL be wrong since I spell like a 3rd grader. Sorry!
P.S. If he's right on being rich, I'am sure the car won't have a problem being repaired.
