Bad AST = poor idle?
Apologies for the lack of in depth searching -- there were about 100 somewhat related but mostly irrelevant threads that came.
Well anyways, my stock AST finally cracked and started leaking last night. The CEL had been flickering on and off the past couple of days. It's time for a new one, but I would like to ask if perhaps could this be the cause of my irratic idle at times? On occasion in the past the idle would surge very lightly and the engine would kind of shudder and shake a bit.

I am pretty sure the CEL is related to the leaking AST. I have never had a cel prior to this. The plastic AST cracked really bad and starting spilling coolant. The coolant buzzer finally made a noise before I filled up the coolant a bit to get it into my garage.

Check the cel code, that might be the source of your bad idle.
...and at the risk of sounding redundant, you are going to replace the AST before you drive the car again, aren't you? As you probably know, the AST can have a sudden and catastrophic leak producing engine meltdown in short order. By the time you know there has been a major leak and the engine is overheating your rotary can be toast. You're lucky you caught this minor leak early.
Let us know you fixed your problems and everything turned out alright. We'll all sleep better.

I had been monitoring the CEL and coolant levels for the few days it had been acting up. I noticed coolant pooling around the AST yesterday, which was when the CEL popped up. I do not have a PFC. And yes, the car has been sitting in my garage since the coolant around the AST was discovered. Thanks for suggestions guys.
irratic idle can be caused by:
a vacuum leak <---get some carb cleaner and spray in the rst nest area and intake manifold. If your idle responds when you spray you know you have a leak
TPS sensor<--- rather asy to check do a search under damian he did a good write up
and an exhaust leak<--- I haven't done that yet so I have no input for you.
