Bad 02 Sensor Sign?
Whats a sign of a bad o2 sensor or sensor wire?
My car idles fine, the exhaust however gets really black from backfiring I believe, and the smell of gas sometimes gets to me when I am near it.

Replace the sensor if you're over 60k miles www.o2sensors.com has them for $35
I'm sure you could always hook up a voltmeter to it.

The ECU doesn't use the O2 sensor at idle, it just uses it at cruise conditions. If its bad, it would affect your mileage at cruise, but people I know who have run without them report no driveability issues.
If you have an Air/Fuel gauge its really easy to tell if your feedback system is working...but if I recall from another thread you're having a problem with your gauge too, right?
