Back on the road after new mods

Well, I finally got my seven back on the road after close to $1,000 in mods (not a lot for a seven of course), and these are my impressions:

Blitz NurSpec: great sounding exhaust, better quality then the Apexi and HKS that I have sold before at the shop I work for, nice idle, deep, no popping or cracking, and between it and the intake, definently feels more powerful, spools quicker, more enjoyable to drive

Rotary Reliability and Racing CAI: pretty simple design, a grip load of K & N filters, decent fitment with after market radiator, along with exhaust there is a noticible increase in power and when the turbos spool. To get it right, I ended up wedging a piece of pipe insulation between the back edge of the ducting and the side of the motor compatment, holds well so far, and when the second turbo comes on, it sounds really, really pissed off, just so loud, maybe its on its way, but damn, its loud and mean.

Koyo radiator: has helped cooling some, but did not fix heat problem, definently cools better when left to sit, ie engine temps drop faster sitting outside, motor off, car in the sun. looks nice, fitment was pretty good, stock airbox and stock IC duct don't fit great, but I got them in, (stock air box has now been replace)

Fan assembly: one of my fan motors had died, and since I couldn't acquire a single motor at a reasonable price, I paid $170 plus shipping for a whole assembly, used, (thanks boost-in-RX7s93) in great shape and running well, both motors work and spin well

M2 AST elimination: one less piece of underengineered crap u
nder my hood destined to fail, (thanks Amp)

Gotham Racing Short shifter: very stiff, short throws are so nice, haven't missed third or ground fifth since install, reverse almost takes two hands to do, first feels almost straight up, fifth is very stiff which helps with the 2-3 shifts, fourth is really nice, first is stiff but very positive, kinda nice, my only complaint is how short reverse is, in that I'm never really sure if I'm all the way in, installation wasn't bad, but pulling the nuts off of the front of the old shifter was a pain, because getting a tool around them was damn near impossible.

180f thermostat from Pettit: takes the car longer to warm up, and, like other cooling mods, has helped to retard the car from getting hot while stopped in 100f+ weather,

I have not taken the car out with the Gtech pro/comp accelerometer to test it, and I need to get off my dead @$$ and put in my EGT and boost gauges, but it is definenlty more fun to drive, it sounds better at idle, wot, and cruising on the freeway (no droning), and two nights ago, when I first took it out, I launched it at about 4000rpm ( a bit too high) and spun through first, second and on the shift to third, which I have never before managed in this car. You could probably blame the crappy kumhos that are on it right now, but they are only about 10 months old and have a fair amount of tread left. Now I need to put in my gauges, and get my frickin carbon fiber hood, which, if any one cares, is the VIS Knightsports knock-off with two vents over the stock intercooler, and two closer to the windshield to vent the ever important abs and power steering. Hopefully this will help to cool down temps, but since it will come in right before I leave for school, and UC Davis doesn't give parking passes to freshmen, its gonna have to sit under its cover next to the Daytona for several months. This winter I'm looking to do my motor rebuild with porting, and, if I can pull it off, a PFC with commander, injectors, boost controller, the downpipe I ordered, fuel pump & rail, and maybe an intercooler so I can run some more boost, but that all depends on how much I can make during winter brake and not spend on alcoholic beverages and/or profolactics at school. As soon as I get compression going on the photos I have taken, I'll post them so you guys can see what I've done. Josh

Sounds like a bunch of good stuff. About the exhaust, is it as loud as the N1? I've heard the N1 on a couple cars, and it's bearable with just the exhaust, but throw in a MP and it's waaay to loud for everyday use.

I believe it is a fair amount quieter then the N1, at idle it was really nice and deep, it doesn't pop or make ricer noises, and it really isn't that loud in the higher revs, in that you hear the turbos and the motor before you would notice the exhaust, from both the inside and outside. I'm really pleased with it, it fit really well, came with the gasket, was well packaged, build quality was as good as any exhaust I've seen for a Japanese car, and it wasn't as expensive as most other exhausts. I don't know how it would be with a midpipe, thats a ways off for me, maybe somebody else could tell you, because I just don't know
