Question Axel problem

I see that my passenger side axel has the boot ripped, I'm in the process of ordering a new boot to replace, is it a vital thing to change the whole axel? I have been probably driving around with this ripped boot for a few hundred miles without knowing it. If it isn't a big of a deal then I guess I'll just replace the boot on the axel. What do you guys reckon?
