AVC-R and Pettit Unlimited

Just thought I'd offer and update after my last fiasco. Turns out that the problem I had before really was just a poor job (done by me of course) in plugging in the ECU and the plug just came loose.

Over the weekend I finished installing the Apexi AVC-R Electronic Boost Controller. I had been having some issues with over boosting on the primary (no such problem on the secondary sadly). I finished the AVC-R on Saturday. At the same time I reinstalled the Pettit Unlimited ECU. Saturday afternoon I started to tune the AVC-R. Very nice unit and with the "how-to" write-ups available, so simple that even a simpleton such as myself was able to understand it.

My 94 Touring has intake, cat-back, and hi-flow cat. Everything else is stock. Given what I think I know about the Pettit ECU, the stock fuel system, the stock twins, etc... I felt that I should be able to handle boost levels of .85 bar. I tuned the AVC-R to give me no more than that through primary and then less in secondary.

My interest is in autocross and it is all run in 2nd gear anyway so this works pretty well. I ran today at an event and was happy with the performance of both the car and the AVC-R. Using the max-hold feature I was able to make sure that I never went over that .85 bar boost on any of my runs. Driving home from the event I fine tuned it even more as well as setup a secondary map that only gives me .65 bar.

My plan is to use the "B" setting for daily driving, keeping the boost below at just below 9.5 psi. I also can turn the controller off which gives me just the spring tension of the wastegate or about .5 bar (7psi). I'll just turn the AVC-R off when my son is going to drive it.

The install was frankly a pain. Conceptually, it is easy. In practice, getting the old hoses off the wastegate actuators was tough. If I ever do this again, or want to change it, I'll do it at the same time as a radiator flush. That way I can just take off the radiator and heater hoses that get in the way. As it was I had to remove the alternator/air pump/water pump belt. Beyond that, it was pretty straight forward.
