PA Autometer Tach Question

Before the flame war starts, this tach is mounted in place of my factory gauges. I'll get a picture after I'm finished.

Anyway, I still don't under stand what the lead and trailing wires are. I know the lead is on the right but what exactly does it hook into? My rpms were way off before I pulled it out. I'm guessing it's just wired wrong. Would you wire it to the ecu or do I have to run it through the firewall into a wire? I've also noticed sometimes when I stop that the gauge needle will go all the way to 10k then back down to 0 then to whatever it thinks the rpm is. Almost sounds like a ground problem...???
