Automatic Transmission Lettering

I am guilty of having an automatic transmission...
The lettering by the shift handle is deteriorated, by some unknown combination of heat, time, and warp speed.
Is there any clever way to make that lettering look presentable and let the light shine through it pretty at night again? Or is this a matter of remove and replace with a new one to make it look good?

Thanks

on another unit

tried buying a replacement shifter that was claimed to have good lettering.
Well, yes, and no. The lettering was readable and attached, but there was deterioration crud on the underside of the plastic plate on the replacement too.
Have not tried to disasemble and clean yet.

The replacement decal sounds interesting.

My Lettering was shot too. I pulled the plate and glued little plastic letters on backwards and painted everything else black. Peeled off the letters and it looks great now.
