Automatic-specific question....Any AT experts?

The car will not start from a stand-still in 1st gear. It takes off in 2nd or 3rd (haven't driven the thing enough to tell which). It will only start out in 1st if 1st is manually selected with the shifter. After it gets moving at a decent clip (40mph) it seems to shift correctly.

Anyone have a clue what might be causing this?

PS this question is referring to a Z32 I am fixing to flip in order to buy more RX-7 parts, but the Z32 uses the same Jatco trans as the Rx-7, by coincidence.

So let me get this right. You put the car in "D" and the car will not move in 1st gear but it will instead shift itself into 2nd and move? It will go into 1st without problems if manually selected via the "hold" button and shifted into "L". I'm just a little confused at the moment but hopefully you can clarify for me.

When the car is in "D", at a standstill, it seems to be in 2nd or 3rd by default, and starts out in one of those gears (don't know which but it is awful slow so I imagine it's 3rd). It will only accelerate from a standstill in 1st if you manually select D1 with the shifter.

To be clear, the car does not shift itself out of 1st When you try to start from a stop in D, but is already in a higher gear when it's sitting still. Once the car is moving along at 40-50 and above it seems to shift normally. Basically it seems that in low speeds or when you are stopped, the transmission does not "know" that you have slowed down or are at a stop and thus does not select 1st automatically.

huh... sounds like a one way clutch issue... but i dunno thats weird... might be a PCM issue?

Generally, if a car wont start in D, but when you manually select "1st Gear or Low Gear" its because the clutch or clutch packs used to engage first gear are shot, and when you select "1st" its using the band to select first... but i dunno... never taken a Auto Tranny from an FD before.
