Question Auto Tranny Question, Please put in your .02

Simple question.
Im looking to get a 93-93 RX-7.

Obviously I wanna have fun, but about 80%-90% of my driving is in town, like stoplight to stoplight, short distances. So it seems like the right thing to get a Auto tranny.

I want your input on:
1. How much HP can the Auto tranny take? b/c i wanna do upgrades still.

2. Will the car still be fun ?

3. Why would I be better still getting the manual?

I added the last for some extra comments. I really wanna hear from all you guys on this one.
Ill be buying soon. Probably during the winter to get a steal on one.

Also, if anyone is looking to let go of a auto 93-95 in above average shape, let me know.

There are a few posts from the past that debated auto vs manual. You can do a search on that to get the full spectrum of views.

Typically, manual drivers say they'll never touch an auto bc they want more control of their cars. Auto drivers say that it's almost just as fast and less hassle. It's a personal choice.

Will you have fun in an auto? I think 10/10 auto drivers will say yes! It's fast in either form.

The auto will take quite a few mods that can handle at least 300 rwhp. So, unless you are going to spend over $2-3K of mods, I think it shouldn't be a factor.

Good luck with your search! Go test drive an auto and a stick. Maybe that will help! Also, you'll find that people get turned off when they see an auto sometimes. If you are getting an auto, be prepared to get that from time to time. Then, take them for a drive or better yet, go on a cruise with them. They'll quickly realize that an FD is an FD -- auto or manual.

What alot of manual guys don't know is that the auto has a 'Hold' feature, that locks it into which ever gear you choose so you can shift it manually.

So, you press the Hold button, then use the gear lever to shift in to each gear as you are driving. I actually shift it manually this way 90% of the time.

I have a 93 Silver Touring with about 8000 miles on a new motor. I've been tinkering with the idea of selling it, but I can't bring myself to it. E-mail me if you are interested.

here's my 2 cents....
I am in the middle of doing a 5 spd swap.

I did all the bolt on mods you could possibly do to the engine, without resorting to anykind of porting. I dynoed at 270 rwhp, and was kinda pissed because I spent a lot of money and got just 270. Someone on the forum suggested that maybe my torque converter (TC) was gone.

Anywho, I went to the track after that and made a fews passes. The best was 13.4 @ 107. A few days afterwards, I lost 1st, 2nd, and reverse gears. It would only take off in 3rd. I still managed to kill a Supra in that form! There was a terrible whirling noise comming from the TC, sugessting that it's been shot, and possibly killed my tranny as metal debris flew into the tranny.

So becareful!

Auto VS. Manual

My first FDS# was an Auto. I enjoyed it very much as i also do alot of in city driving. This car shifted hard when using the hold button and shifted smoothly when left alone, would get side ways in a heartbeat and liked not having to deal with a clutch. I now have a 94 Manual and after getting the boost problems solved I am enjoying it as much as the Auto. I would have bought the 94 even if it was an Auto. Some think the Auto's are worth less, good point in buyers favor. Auto should handle most modifacations done normaly for reliability and slighly higher than stock boost say 12 to 13 psi. Hope this helps some, I don't see where you can go wrong as I love driving both of these cars and though I have a dailey driver .....I never seem to go past the 7, just sucks me in and off we go so it's driven daily in city traffic.
