Question Auto to Manual differences---Engine swap ?...

I wasn't able to find a specific answer to this question so hopefully someone knows. Will a engine from a manual tranny car bolt up to a auto tranny car. I don't want to do a auto to manual swap. I would like to leave the car as is minus the engine. Is there anything i would need to modify or change to swap an engine over. I don't see why the block/ housings would be any different from having a different factory tranny but you never know i guess. I'm basically looking at an engine that was pulled from a manual tranny car and would like to use it in my auto tranny car. Thanks in advance for any answers or links.

The rear plate between the manuals and auto is different. I know the manual trans can be bolted to the auto rear plate, but I have no personal experience with the manual trans to auto rear plate.

There are also a few differences in the vacuum lines, auto engines have more...check the vacuum diagrams to find these.

Also, the starters are different...

as stated above rear plate and starter are different along with vacuum lines. so you are going to need to salvage some parts from your old engine to make it work , or just hold out until you can find a complete auto swap. why not just rebuild your engine ?

not really sure about FD's but i know ive swaped alot of FCs and they bolt right up either tranny to either engine. but the guys up above said their different so id trust them what your planning on doing is basically an inverted auto to manual swap, as long as your only swapping the block and not the LIM, UIM, exhaust housing, etc. you shouldnt have to worry about vacuum lines. but i could be wrong like i said ive mest with alot of FC's but not an FD yet..

Are these plates interchangeable? Is it just a plate that bolts to the block? Would i just be able to unbolt my auto plate and bolt it to this block that came out of a manual car? Basically here's the situation; My car runs fine and does not need a rebuild right now. But i do know one of these days it will need built (high mileage). I am looking at a complete manual long block assy from a guy on here that's been converted to a single turbo and supporting mods. So i figured instead of being caught between a rock and a hard place so to speak when my engine does fail, thought i'd pick this is up swap them around

Well, IIRC the auto plate has 6 locations for bolts and the manual has 5. I Think it would be okay to put a manual tranny on an auto because all the bolt holes on the bell housing line up and are able to be filled. On the contrary, bolting an auto tranny to a manual rear plate would not be wise because you will only be able to bolt 5 of the 6 bolt locations for the auto bell housing. I'm guessing the extra bolt is to compensate for the heavier auto tranny so, it wouldn't be wise to try to make it work because it is there for a reason.

So is this "plate" interchangeable or is it something that is part of the block itself? I have no problem swapping the plates around if its not a big deal to do. Does anyone have a picture of this plate in the FSM or anything? Thanks for all the replies so far.

Its the rear cover for the housing. You would have to change that. = bitch.

Anything else that you know of that comes on a manual engine that would not work on my auto setup? This long block i am interested in buying is setup as single turbo so re-doing the vacuum hoses shouldn't be an issue right? Engine harness still P&P for all the sensors etc? Thanks alot for your help.

As stated the rear plate is different, I dont think the auto tranny will bolt up to it as the starter mounts different. So a partial engine tear down would be required to replace that plate.

Next the harness is different. You would have to almost completely strip down both engines to get the auto harness swapped. There is also an extra vacuum chamber in the automatic rats nest that could get changed over. The harnesses become so brittle with age that unless yours has recently been replaced there is good chance of something not working properly when its put back together
