Auto FD owners who've pulled their engine....

Did you pull the transmission WITH the engine, or take the engine out by itself?
I've been staring at my engine bay now, off and on for about a trying to figure out the best way....sigh. I just don't see how to get the engine and tranny separated whilst on the car (and reconnecting would be even MORE of a bitch!), but then it almost looks like one would have to pull off the front crossmember by the steering rack in order to have the room one would need to get the entire assembly out.
It has finally cooled down here in my part of the world where I am feeling like working on this bitch again and get it fixed before I waste the money I've saved on wine, women and song....lol!

I've never pulled one with the trans still attached. It's generally pretty simple to disengage the clutch through the service inspection hole on the bottom of the trans. Once you have the 14mm bolts all out It prys apart fairly easily. Getting the input shaft back in once you go to re-install the engine just takes a little paitence. I imagine it wouldn't be so hard to remove the engine with the trans still attached so long as you can get the trans to clear the car.

bajaman,

I've never tried to separate or work on an auto tranny. However, I have pulled engines with and without the tranny. The problem with pulling the engine with the tranny attached is that you'll need a friend or a load leveler for the hoist. Other than that, it's pretty straight forward.

I've pulled countless other engines but have always had much more room to work with.
The auto tranny is HUGE on these cars. It just looks like it will be insanely difficult to manuever such large combined unit in and out of the car...sigh.

I'm getting ready to go have another look at things before the football games start this afternoon. Maybe inspiration will strike.
