atmosphere bov

Just buying my rx7 this week and wondering if anyone knows if an atmosphere blow off valve would give me better performance or be a little easier on the turbos?

The stock BOV is best.

yea, while being fun and giving the much desired "woosh", on a basically stock system adding an atmospheric bov won't improve performance.

if you think that venting your BOV will give you "performance" then you don't deserve an FD.

don't buy it. get a shitvic instead.

can't you just vent the stock one to atmosphere? since the system is MAP based, you'll get the sound and it will still look stock. I dont know if that is a big deal where you live or not.

I thought both the BOV and the CRV (correct em if I am wrong) could be vented to atmosphere... since they both just vent into the airbox anyways. I believe Mazda did this to dampen the sound. Just do a little reverse engineering.

Plus, if you want to make the BOV respond faster... if it makes that much of a difference, there is a guy that can modify your stock one to be just as fast as any aftermarket. someone post a link to info? I never saved it.

The BOV is open under vacuum. IMO it's not worth the risk of breathing unfiltered air just to get the rice sound.

it's only very slightly open - like a slit. not completely open, and definitely not open enough to suck in anything.

on my previous FD i had an homemade (pettit style) intake and i left my BOV & CRV vented. in two years of having them like that i never had a problem.

While it won't suck in a t-shirt, the big risk is tiny bits of grit that wear the engine.

Not to mention that most turbos blow at least a little bit of oil. That filter is the only thing keeping that half of the engine bay sorta clean.

Would this second BOV replace the CRV?

And if so would you place that in line with the first BOV? Like on a Greddy elbow side by side.

Ok, so run the stock BOV to atmosphere with a filter on the end. I bet it is still loud enough to hear and it will (still) do the same thing it did before... and the same thing an aftermarket one will.

Fixered yo!
