Atkins FD Rebuilt motor on ebay!
Hi guys I need your help. What do you think about this motor. I'm interested in bidding on it but the guy can't seem to get any compression numbers for it which makes it seem fishy. He says he rebuilt it and I emailed the guy but he can't come up with any compression numbers. Plus it's a bit of a frankenstein since it is using cosmo parts. But on the other hand if all the parts are good as he states it to be I could break it open and redo the build, just to be on the safe side. It sounds to good to be true, what do you think should I just pass it up. I would like to keep it as a spare engine.
Here is the only information the seller discloses in his ad:
"THIS IS A REBUILT COSMO 13B-REW TWIN TURBO MOTOR REBUILT WITH SINGLE APEX SEALS FROM ROTARY AVIATION.THE FRONT COVER IS FROM A 1993 RX-7 THE REAR PLATE HAS ALREADY BEEN DRILLED AND TAPPED TO EXCEPT THE FD OIL PAN COMES WITH THE BOLTS FOR THE REAR MOTOR MOUNTS.MOTOR HAS NEVER BEEN RUN HAS GOOD COMPRESSION FRONT AND REAR ROTORS AND ALL PARTS INSIDE THE MOTOR WERE IN GREAT SHAPE ALL NEW OIL SEALS AND WATER SEALS WERE REPLACED.MOTOR WOULD BE GOOD FOR A FD PROJECT CAR OR A SECOND GEN....MOTOR IS SOLD AS IS ....SHIPPING WILL BE 150.00 DOLLARS I SPENT ABOUT 2,200 IN MOTOR MY LOSS IS YOUR GAIN"
Thanks

As with buying any used motor, it's pot luck and you get what you pay for. But, the price is VERY reasonable and the guy has solid good feedback.
The cosmo irons do have larger intake ports, so that is an upgrade. If the work was done well, you'd be all good. If nothing else, the engine is likely worth that much in parts - rotors, rotor housings, etc.
At the end of the day, it's a gamble. It's cheaper than what you could buy a comparable engine for, but you may not have a 100% engine.
It's really your call, but I give it more on the positive side of being a good motor and a good Ebay deal.
Of course, the price will likely go up quite a bit before the auction is done .

Thanks Dale. For the information.
I imagine the price will go up, as well. On a side note the plus in my situation is, I have a second core at home with low compression. I haven't broke it apart yet, but I might have a slight edge since I could probably pull parts off the other if I find its a dud.
I was also hoping someone could give me a little info on the 1 piece apex seals. I imagine they are mainly for race applications. Do you guys think it may be a problem, I plan on using this engine for a normal street driven machine.

Sorry that was more of a typo. The guy said he used an atkins rebuild kit to build it. So I would also be taking a chance on him rebuilding it. Most likely I would break it down and spec it again, just to be certain it is good.

I'm always suspicious of deals like this. Too little information for my taste, and WHY did he have the engine and now wants to let go of it? Few if any people just build up a 13BREW for ***** and grins...lol.
I didn't check the ad, so I don't know the price. But if it is more than about $750 I would pass on it.

Thanks for the help bajaman. It only went for $600 shipped, which is a hell of a deal at that, hell the accentric shaft is worth that alone .
But, Apparently it's a more difficult task than I thought swapping out the cosmo 13b rew, for the Fd 13b rew short block, would be. Because the intake ports, and also the fuel ports are much different. Apparently RX7tt95 had already done the swap, and began to explain the process of compeleting it but never finished up what was necessary, in this thread-----> https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=153563&highlight=cosmo+motor<-------. I plan on sending him a pm to get more information. I think it would be beneficial to all to see what parts are interchangeable and require modifications, for the shear fact that cosmo engines can be attained at a lesser expense.

oh and the other thing I found is that it was a project fd, for some reason the guy had all the work done and never completed it. Now he is parting out the whole FD. Yes, its the yellow engine bay, painted in vintage red. Seems pretty legitimate. But I don't need more projects, I was looking for a spare engine but not if it is going to require a hell of modifications to get it running. Also, wondering if the exhaust port lengths might have been different as well since the cosmo's have a different turbo setup, probably not compatible with stock fd turbos, just guessing though.

Yeah....I've had a few "project" cars in my life....the ones that you always have such good intentions of "fixing up" and recovering your investement X number of times over...lol.
It never seems to pan out the way you plan though.....

I would be worried about if he rebuilt it right or not... He might have rebuilt it with the best of intetions but he might have done something wrong when he was putting it togather but fucked up... if he did and you blow the motor up 200 miles into the break end your out all the cash you paid for it... better to just go out and either rebuild it your self CAREFULLY or just get a atkins motor...
