apexi fc ecu or no?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm My rx7s got a stock mount intercooler, hks twin air induction kit, hks bov, straght through exhaust. What can i gain from getting a apexi power fc eca/ comander? my car isnt running right, some people say its because of the mods? so if i got one would it help?

-Smoother transition to second turbo
-More reading instrument readings from commander
-Easy to tune ECU, probably the most popular aftermarket one for the FD
-Ability to control what temp fans come on
-MUCH MUCH MORE

Do you have a boost controller? I'm guessing you havent gotten your car tuned since adding some of those mods?

i am a big fan of the Power FC as second everything Supernaut posts above.

hmmm, straight thru exhaust. how much boost are you running? anything above 14 psi and you will be getting to know engine builders. the stock turbos start getting into surge problems above 14. further, you end up w superheated charge air and therefore less oxygen into your engine thereby producing less hp at higher boost. it is easily possible to hurt your motor if you have no boost control and a straight exhaust.

you will LOVE your Power FC/Commander but you will be traveling down a slippery slope. next stop Datalogit and then...

do it right and you will have a more powerful reliable FD. all the info you need to make the right choices in the process is right here on this board.

enjoy the journey.

Howard is right on with his post, with the modifications you have and any future modifications to come the Power FC is a must if you don't want to do damage to your engine. You will also be very happy with if after a good tuning.
Here is a link to a great supplier http://banzai-racing.com/store/93-95...APEXi_pfc.html
Good luck, Joe

Really? I would like to learn more about this surge at 14 psi with a straight through exhaust (which I also have). I was just looking for a compressor map of the twins. I found this old post by Dale - and your post #5 in it - but the scales are numberless...

Thanks Howard, and sorry BrodieRX7 for high-jacking your thread on this specific issue, but when Howard speaks we all must listen and learn...

Power FC is a must

Just plugging in the Power FC you can tell improvements right off. I would recommend this to someone even if they were just doing reliability mods to a stock car. However, since Howard has already approved I will stop here cause thats all you need to know. Jason at the RX7 Store has nice prices on this and it comes w/remote commander ready to plug in.

Id put a cat back on until you do something to combat potential boost creep (search it), but the Power FC is a great addition to any FD...painfully simple to install and gives you a lot of options, not over priced either.

It seems to stutter and splutter when you get to the high revs. I have tried putting everything back to stock but makes no difference. So i think am going to have to go all the way to England to jimmys rx7 to see if he can fix it. I have got my macanic to try a few things like the secondery injecors/ vaccume pipes, but still stutters and splutters!

Boost controler

What would be the best boost controler to go for? is it safe to go for a secondhand power fc/ comander?

How much boost are you seeing? The straight through exhaust can cause the car to overboost. This causes boost/fuel cut above 12psi on the stock ecu, which would feel like "sputtering" at the high rpms.

A boost controller will not solve boost creep problem. Pull the turbos and port the wastegate, intall a PFC and it will control the boost for you. Used units are OK if you know the owner, otherwise you could potentially buy a fried PFC. A used one you can reset back to the original setting.

the vacuum line goes to the extra nipple in the top of the UIM. connect the black wire to ground and the white/red wire to a 12v power source that is switched on when the ignition turns on. i used a wire from my ashtray light, but if you have an aftermarket stereo, you could tap into one of those wires.

if you just want to know boost, hook up the vacuum line and tape the gauge to the inside of the car. when i first bought my car, to make sure it was boosting properly, i hooked up the gauge and ran the line under the hood through the window of the car. it worked, but i'm sure i looked really dumb.

Install the boost gauge now. A temporary installation without running things through the firewall grommet is perfectly acceptable for now. Mods "hurt" by causing excess boost, so if that's what's going on this could be quite simple to fix.

For a quick and easy 12v source, use the one I reference in my water temp gauge writeup: www.davidgeesaman.com

Just connected the vacuum hose up to see what the boost is. my gauge reads in kg/cm2 above 0 and cmHg under 0. So when i started the engine the needle went from 0 down to 60cmHg and with a good rev i could only get it to go to 10cmHg? i thought it shoud go above 0 into the kg/cm2? So are these readings right? or is it my gauge? or the car just not boosting and thats whats causing it to stutter and splutter when you drive it at high revs?

Are you moving? It's going to be pretty tough getting into boost without any load.

If you are going to a shop or planning on going to a tuner ask them what ECu to use, power FC's are pretty popular but there are others out there, if you get a power FC make sure you have someone to tune it.
