Apex seal

Hey,

A dealership service department is telling me I have blown an apex seal on my '94 RX-7. I need some advice on what to do.

Is there any way I can confirm this?

Should the car run at all?

Do I need an engine rebuild? If so, how much will that cost?

Should I consider selling the car? If so, how much below blue book would I have to go?

Thanks,
Ian

Are you blowing much smoke?
Hard to start?

Whichever way it goes, take it to an expert, not a Dealership....

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

It isn't really blowing smoke. Occassionally I get gas in the exhaust system, but that has always happened.

A few days ago it was starting, but ran very badly and then stopped. Today it wasn't starting at all. They tell me that after replacing some spark plugs it started, but was running badly (not driveable).

Are there many places that can give a good second opinion?

Engine rebuild

Can anyone tell me how much an engine rebuild should cost?

Thanks,
Ian

Get a compression test done on the car.

Rebuilds run anywhere from around $3500 and up, depending on the amount of damage that needs to be repaired. I would imagine you can expect a rebuild to be around $4000 at the end of the deal.

Definitely do not let the dealer replace the engine. Call some of the rebuilders like Pineapple Racing, Pettit, KDR, etc... they will be able to give you ballpark figures.

Check the compression, or ask them for the print out.
You can pull 1 spark plug in each rotor and turn the engine.
You should hear 3 even pulses from each rotor, if not one of them has lost compression and you need a new motor.

A dealer is going to get you for ~$4000, which is about the avarage cost for an R&R of an FD engine.

If you're looking to sell the car instead of going through the hassle email me ryanodneal@attbi.com
I'm looking for a project car and will do the work myself.
