I've assembled a motor with housings that were cermet coated at a customer's request. I don't recall who did the coating as the customer provided the housings, but the process was pretty sloppy with overspray all over the sides of the housings and in the coolant passages. The motor started and ran fine through the breakin period. Unfortunately the customer ended up doing his own fuel system as some point after the car left my shop and the car ended up burning to the ground, so there wasn't enough run time to determine the long term durability. In my opinion it is better to have housings resurfaced. Anything that won't come out with a light hone or that has chrome flaking is junk to me.
