I absolutely HATE my terribly purple-tinted rear window, and if I ever ditch it I'd like to shed some pounds, too.

^ Wow, that's pretty reasonable. I might do this while my car is in getting its boost problems sorted.

fail, just fix your tint, if its not a dedicated track car don't even consider Lexan windows.

Well, the tint won't peel of since it's baked on or something. And if I'm going to replace the rear window, why not Lexan? Nothing wrong with less weight, and my car's pretty noisy as it is.

The price of the lexan is not bad, but the shipping is like 100 bucks and there is a long wait time. Also you will want to replace the rear window seal, which is ~90 bucks from mazda. Just a little more info for ya. BTW I do have an extra rear window seal since I accidentally bought 2. If anyone wants it PM me.

The problem with lexan is that is scraches very easily even washing it will scratch it. Thats why it is not a good idea for a street car.

I gather there are some anti-scratch coatings or films that can be applied to lexan or plexi windows, is this correct?

For your tint issue. Grab black trash bags (hefty ones) cut them open so they are just sheets. Spray ammonia or 409 glass cleaner on the inside of the glass (tinted side) stick the trash bags to the wet glass and leave the car outside on the warmest day possible in direct sunlight. Do not crack the windows or sunroof, it has to get warm in there. The tint will come right off. Wipe off the remaining adhesive with a good glass cleaner and air out your car. Don't ditch a glass window for Lexan because you think its going to solve your problems. You WILL regret it, Lexan scratches fairly easily.

^^This...

The tint will come off. I have never seen tint that is impossible to get off. Some of it is a PITA, but this is an easy way to do it.

This won't mess up my rear defroster lines?

That is one of the best ways to remove rear tint w/o messing up the rear defroster lines. Using razor blades or any other scraping device it what messes them up.

Great video static...

Well, I might just have my boys at Rotorsport try that de-tintifying routine.

i used to work at a factory at lake of the ozarks missouri that made lexan windshields for race cars among other things. anyway i worked in the clean room that antiscratch coated them and the stuff worked great we accidentally over cooked one when forming and bubbled it so we scratch coated it anyway and then tried to scratch it a 300lb man with a piece of 1" angle iron winded himself before he made a scratch. the place is called percy's high performance the guy got his start making a jet adjuster for holley carbs that didn't require removal of the carb.
