Question Anyone with info on manual trans rebuild?

So where would one get a rebuilt tranny for a 93 FD? Who's the best for the $$$?

Anybody have an estimate on costs?

If your synchros are shot, do you just rehave them replaced or do you rebuild the whole works?

You can do many things with getting a transmission for a FD rebuilt. You can just get synchros replaced. Or you can replace bearings and seals while you're in there. The problem is usually you have bearings that are going bad, leaking seals, etc when you are going to get synchros replaced so sometimes it's good to get the whole thing rebuilt. I suggest doing the most you can with your transmission while they're fixing something, I wouldn't skimp on something if they say it should be replaced soon. I had mine fully rebuilt a KD Rotary for about $1100.00 2 years ago. Here lately KDR does fully blueprinted trannys now and has a special 5th gear they can put in for racing purposes I believe. www.kdrotary.com At the time I had mine rebuilt PF Supercars wanted $1500.00 to rebuild mine. Of course both of these places are on the east coast, but I would look at www.mazdatrix.com or someone like them and see if you can get it done for somewhere between 1k-1.5k.

I spent 8 weeks and three tranny removals trying to get mine taken care of myself, only to find that the mainshaft/input shaft junction was trashed. I got a used one for $500 from a local, reputable salvage yard. They had three and I asked for the newest production date. I could have had the whole project done it two days and spent 500 instead of 1800 and 8 weeks.

Just a suggestion, my place had a 30 warranty, enough to know if it was good or not. Put that 5th gear shiftgate upgrade in whatever you do!

Garfinkle builds them , use the factory repair book. He may change some of the clearances for better shifting and life

Who's Garfinkle? I have a fifth gear syncro that's shot and my second isn't all that good, although a dealer supposedly rebuilt that gear.

Yea man, the syncros are like $30 each and there are 2 bearing that are about $15 each. There are a few other things but non of it is really expensive. The only prob with doing it yourself is you need some specialty type tools like a good torch(not one of those little blue **** Wal Mart torches either, a real torch), 3 foot pipe that about 2.5"dia, snap ring pliers. Anyway, if you have a nice big clean area and a Mazda shop manual along with those tools I mentioned you can prob do it your self. The trick is to take everything off one thing at a time and just lay it all down in order so you remember how to put it together. Follow all the clearances and tq specs in the manual and your set. I'll admit some parts are pretty tedious

Anyway, if you dont have all that you can check with www.Pineappleracing.com I think they have a good price on a rebuild.

Good luck,
STEPHEN
