Question Anyone hear of these supposedly common problems w/ FDs?

From http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/U...ewreliability/ (I was just curious how others reviewed the FD...)

Trouble Spots:

- Air conditioner: A problem in the hazard-flasher switch circuit prevents the air conditioning from working. (1993-95)

- Climate control: Using a nonoriginal-equipment air filter allows hot air to be drawn into the air pump causing it to fail. (1993-95)

The NHTSA Recalls are old news (can be found here: http://www.marx7.org/infocenter/faqs/3rd_faq_3.html)

Sidenote: They recommended the FD over the Vette, 300ZX, and other high end sports cars for anyone who values performance...but rated the car's fuel economy a 2 out of 10 and the car overall at a 3.5 out of 10

This page has more detail on the various TSBs. No mention of the A/C problem, but I have heard of issues with the HVAC switch assembly (which includes the hazard button) keeping A/C from turning on. However, number 25 pertains to the air pump failure you mentioned.

25. AIR PUMP FAILURE DUE TO INSTALLATION OF NON-GENUINE AIR CLEANERS

Applicable Models: 1993-95 RX-7
Bulletin No. 006/95
Issued: 4/5/95

Installing non-genuine air cleaners may lead to air pump failure. Unlike
the original design, non-genuine air cleaners draw heated, engine compartment
air into the air pump. This air increases pump temperature which may result
in lubrication loss and bearing failure. Customers should be informed that
the vehicle warranty prohibits alteration of the emission control system as
well as other components. Recommend that the customer have the original air
cleaner installed to prevent non-warrantable component failure.
BTW, the air filter isn't part of the emissions control system. This is basically Mazda covering their asses.

LMAO! The last time I checked, aftermarket air filters don't have a suction tube that hangs over the stock turbo manifold. Hot air, pfft!

As for the AC system not working, I have sorta had that problem. It wasn't due to the hazard-flasher, though. I guess the contacts on the "A/C" button have become somewhat corroeded over time, so the AC turns on/off sometimes.

Thanks for the info Jim

The TSB list on my site documents both of those. They're not really common problems, but they were each addressed as a TSB.

Some older aftermarket intakes just put a small filter on the inlet of the air pump. This greatly increases the temp of the air it sucks in, which can cause premature failure of the air pump. The stock setup draws from the airbox which pulls from the inlet duct. Most good intakes nowadays draw cool air. This was mainly telling dealers about this so techs wouldn't do a warranty replacement on an air pump that had been breathing hot air.

The wiring to the AC switch goes through the hazard switch. Personally I've never heard of this failure, but I do believe there was a TSB on it.

Here's the link to my TSB list with good descriptions on each -

Actually it's my experience that hot air intakes do take out the airpump.
