I wouldnt put it on there without it. Not on somthing that important. If that sealent gave up one day just cruising around.... You wouldnt even know it, and youd most likely over heat. Screw that. lll pay the extra 20 bucks and couple days wait.

on my FC.. it started crying from the wheeping hole.. so i changed the pump
using a chizel and some solvant i clean both surfaces really well
and then using only RTV reassembled it... It works fine..
many OEM cars don't even use Gaskets on the water pump
i've worked on an SR20 and RB26.. neither of which had a gasket..only RTV

I agree that while you CAN just use a good RTV sealant....it is best when used WITH a factory gasket.
If you have no choice, like you have to get your car going RIGHT now and can't wait a few days to get the gasket, you will PROBABLY be okay....but as others have said, why chance it? It IS kind of a pain in the *** to get to, and COULD fail unexpectedly....so why not do it right the first time?

The gasket for the water pump should be REALLY cheap - I'd go ahead and get it. Yes, I think you can get away without one, but you're fixin' to order some oil filter O-rings, so get it.
And, yes, the oil filter pedastal has 2 O-rings that seal it to the block. You can't use RTV here - this is a high pressure fitting, the O-ring are necessary to make it seal. Get the new O-rings, put a little vaseline on them, and install - that's it.
Both the o-rings and the gasket should be cheap, too.

turns out i had the oil filter o-rings after all. I am ordering a water pump gasket because we ended up having other blocking problems that make us unable to continue the project untill we order more parts. thanks for the responses.
