tail out jackassery? Sometimes. Can't anymore right now because my suspension is very unstable/unsafe.

Im going to DD4, but I'm not participating due to aforementioned reasons. There are probably less than 100 people in the entire US who really know how to drift...I am not one of them (this is not counting SCCA pro rally, outrider, and otherwise sponsored professional drivers that participate in sanctioned events) I can control my car, but I wouldnt say that i'm a mad tyte dr1ft3r y0.

A lot of the people jumping on the drift-jdm-spl-super-sugoi-ichiban-dori-garage baka bandwagon do not realize how much time, money and practice it takes.

hey skunks, ever since drifting has gotten popular in the last two years, have more and more Corollas started disappearing (stolen) on the big island? Over here I hear about someone getting their Corolla jacked at least once or twice a week

Hopefully rotary doesnt catch on like the AE85 and AE86 with the mad tyte dr1ft3rs

nah, not many have been getting stolen here, although the price has gone up to like 6k for one haha

i would be getting better but my little drift spot seems to be on a federal ground (i know because the angry military police told me so haha)

BTW: The Apex'i FD won the 2002 D1 Grand Prix. check out the Option #102 vid

I think the hardest part of drifting for me is keeping the gas on, my throttle control is horrible hehe. How are you guys starting your drifts? I usually just blip the throttle in 1st or 2nd to get the rears spinning.

I try...

I got a s13 that I drift in, has an sr20, kaaz 1.5, tein HE coilovers... Its not easy, but its possible, I'm trying to focus on my entry right now, not even concerned with the exit.....

Its really not that hard if your willing to be a little bit rough on your suspension.... coilovers and a better diff do make a huge difference.

Im no pro like takumi (initial d) but I can feel an awakening!!!!

Limited slip definitely helps a lot.

I really like the s chassis cars for drifting. I got to drive several of my friend's 240's (two s13 setups and 2 s14s) and the slightly longer wheelbase seemed to provide a little more stability in oversteer conditions...definitely a much better car for starters.

We have plans to build a wicked 200SX aka S12 Corolla killer. Might keep the stock CA18ET

...to get back on topic. IMO the FD3S is a bad car to choose if you're trying to learn how to drift.

true, the risk of crashign your car is really high but its a risk im willing to take the E-brake is also crap and there is not really that much torque.

it does look pretty good going around a corner though and learning to control your car after you step over the fine line between grip and slip is a plus, it has already saved me 2-3 times when my car stepped out and I instantly knew what to do/it pretty much comming automatically (these were at speeds above 45mph btw)! If I never slid before, I think I would have freaked or froze up or steered in the wrong direction putting me into a wall or someones house or worst... learn how to control your car in a controled enviorment such as a hugh *** empty parking lot or on desearted roads and hopefully you won't crash your car when driving in more hazzardist conditions. practic practic practic!!!

You guys don't have any trouble with wheel hop? I have drifted a couple of corners in autocrosses, and granted I was on race tires, but it sounded and felt like it was destroying the drivetrain. Decided I wouldn't be doing that again.....

Im still in the learning phase, The FD isn't the best car to learn in but then again...it's the only RWD car that i have. It's fun to play around in a wet parking lot also, may help a little and let you get used to the sensation. I don't have my mad drift style yet, yo

www.sileightmania.com (He's a friend of mind and definitely one of the best drifter's on the west coast.)

The S chassis cars are definitely one of the easiest and most popular cars for drifting. The S13 is much more nimble compared to the S14.

In addition to the coilovers and LSD, good tires will help. Cheap tires basically...suck.

IMO, if you can drift in the wet, you can drift in the dry.
Big empty parking lots are always a plus A mall that no one cares about in the middle of no where. I think its easier to practice in the rain since the tires start spinning earlier than on the dry and with less power applied. Gradually, I practice with more and more power applied almost like going in different power steps. When I was in jerzey, I always practiced in the snow. It was everywhere

I'm always practicing. ****, I always even practice with the daily driver since its RWD! No wonder my rear tires need to be replaced now before the front ones...

I gotta say that its tricky (at least for me) in the FD because if you give it just a little bit TOO much power, the tail just comes whipping around like Indiana Jones's whip.

My biggest advice to all you drift practicers out there.....ALWAYS make sure there is nothing around (moving or nonmoving). IF you don't see anyone at the other side of the intersection, turning right onto a 3-4 lane road after a red light is always a good spot. It gives you plenty of room for error (assuming there are no pedestrians or cops around). But mega malls at midnight are usually the best.

lol, yeah for real. I sometimes give it a little whip action when doing a U turn, it's fun when you pull it off right.....You get one of those big *** grins on your face that dosen't go away for a while.

Drifting an FD is hard

All I know, is that the turbo lag on my stock FD sucks, somtimes it kicks in when Im entering a turn somtimes it dosent, when ti dosent, I have a hard *** time disengaging my tires from the ground, but when it works correctly, its pretty smooth into the entry... my exit is just horrific

I get a lot of wheel hop as well. All the HP available makes it easy to transfer the weight of the car when setting up an early apex for a drift...but because of the wheel hop, it can send the car spinning because of the sudden snap oversteer...too much gas, and the car will keep rotating regardless of steering input. A very thin line, indeed.


I never got to see Benson's car in action

Moto and Andy from club4ag are both extremely skilled drivers as well. Andy is a nut up at touge! Once I get my car to pass tech I'm going to have them ride along and give me tips at the next auto-x and drift day.

Clutch kick with snap oversteer will get you around a turn nicely.

do it in the rain...or on wet pavement...much easier on the cars suspension and tires....and alot easier to learn....

OMG I didn't know many people here drifting. We have many S13 (most of them are KAwith open diff), some FC, hondas, lexus etc... my AE86 and friend one are both dead.

hitting the turbo lug on the FD = 99% of spin chance.
but I love drifting the FD. easyer to drift on dry and wet. got a decent power and good weight balance gives you the handling.

AE86 needs more power. but it's very controlable.

LSD definitely helps you drifting. you can put a cone then try donut, you won't be able to do donut w/o LSD.

I bought a LSD from Precision gear, it used to be 350, but raised to $4**. i feel it's one way LSD. but mechanical LSD is better than open or crap niss viscous diff.

most of people use cheep crap tires all around. People who go to Auto-x use better tires for the front like tread wear 1**-2**.

Just a good point to make for all those people who are practicing/learning- make sure you break your wheels loose by either tapping the brakes during a turn, or else bringing up the revs and dropping the clutch or upshifting aggressively. One thing that is pretty cool and those people who live in areas that freeze at night can try it... I think the easiest thing would be one of those tanks that they sell in hardware/gardening stores to mix up chemicals to spray for weeds with. Get a couple of those and fill them with water. Depending on how ambitious you get, you won't need too much. You'll want to spray an area evenly and fairly thinly. You don't want ice to build up, but just a thin, crystallization to occur within the tarmac. Solid ice is dangerous because you won't have any control. Don't go dumping buckets of water out. The spray is to simulate frozen dew. Anway, Dan and I got lucky one night and got to play around in a lot like this because half the lights had gone off and it was cold enough for the condensation to freeze. Its the neatest feeling being able to drift your car at extreme yaw degrees going 10 mph. I think I did it by driving fairly slow in 1st and then bringing up the revs over 4k and dropping the clutch when going into the turn. My favorite memory from that night was when I had the car yawed as far as the steering lock would allow me while still moving in a straight line and Charlie in the passenger seat saying, "Holy ****...... I just looked out the window and I was looking backwards!" It was a lot of fun and deffinitely worth getting one of those spray tanks to do it again. Just watch out for wierdos in Dodge Ram vans trying to come chase you around, right Dan?

Awwww come on Dave that was fun, it wasn't a U turn it was a 90 degree left turn, but it turned into a U turn Yeah, i still gotta get more practice......That night in the parking lot was definatly a lot of fun, i was saying the same thing charlie was when i saw you going crazy. That spray tank would be a good investment to look into. There are two things you have to watch out for when doing this though.....one dry spots and freaking dodge ram conversion vans trying to chase you.

yea Dave, those 10mph-completely-sideways-mad-driftOOO skills were pretty impressive... Dan wasn't doing too bad, just gotta stay further away from those snow banks when youre trying to drift your way out of a 360 on solid ice oh and next time, maybe we should stop for the dumbass in the van that was trying to block us in the parking lot... maybe he just needed directions?! hahaha!

Ha ha. Yeah, Dan almost lost it and went snow plowing around the Gore parking lot a couple times. Dry spots....hhhhyyyyyeeaaah.

Dan- Actually, I believe that was a 90 degree turn that turned into a 90 degree turn followed by a 180. It all kinda flowed together in one big dumbass maneuver.

Yeah, I guess the guy in the van needed directions pretty bad. Probably been driving from Canada and nobody would stop for him because of the suspicious look of his vehicle. ****, I guess that's why he was chasing Dan in the first place... nobody would stop so that was his next attempt. We'll keep an eye out for those people.

Everybody's pickin on me. Dry spots are a bitch. The funniest part about the van chasing me was i could see him leaving from the place in pulled into, and i saw another car (Dave's Rx-7) follow right behind with his headlights off.
