Anybody know how many Gallons are left when lite turns on?

I have always wondered how many miles or gallons we have left when the light turns on.... I think I pushed out about 30 miles before my car started choking and rolled down hill to the gas station once... but I'm not positive, anybody know?
i've never ran my car below half tank, i guess im too paranoid (that, and i have the NR Auto white face gauages, so even if i fill up the entire take, it still stays 1/2 way between the 1st and second notch thingies)
Anyone know of better quality white gauges than the NR auto? or do u think i have to take out the cluster and try to "feather" them in again?

redr1: one think to consider. it is natural to be paranoid about running the car below half tank of gas, but gas is heavy, and 18 gallons is pretty heavy.
when i want to drive the car hard, i run the car under half tank of gas. and i think its fine until you hit the last gallon.
but someone correct me if i am wrong.

It's different on all cars because things get inaccurate over the years. When my light came on was right after the car died because of no gas ... I was trying to restart it and the light popped on.
how much gas you have in your tank is different than how much you can actually use. you might have 3.5 gallons but only be able to use 1.5 gallons more of that. the light comes on when the little round sensor is not immersed in fuel anymore. there could be more gas in the tank but it might not make its way into the fuel tray that prevents starvation.
with daily driving it's ok to drive to the last drop. hard driving i wouldn't go past 1/2 a tank to be safe. 94 and 95s can probably go down lower but there are no guarantees.

The Gas tank is RATED at 20.2 Galons- I have stuffed almost 20gallons in a couple of times BUT have NEVER had the light come on. I did not even know there was one - Maybe not a light on the early 93s?

uh, no.
gas floats in water, i.e. water sinks in gas.
the fuel is sucked from the bottom of the tank.
if you get a bad tank of gas with a bunch of water, you'll know it right away.
even OIL floats in water, just about all petroleum products do. the molecules are less dense, unlike you
but, if you leave the tank near empty for extended periods, any moisture in the air will corrode the inside of the tank, which is bad. among other things, you'll clog your fuel filter with rust flakes. so, best not to store the car with empty tank.
Running on little or no gas isn't a good habit as gas cools your fuel pump. Running on little gas has a tendency to overheat the fule pump.
The low fuel should come on when there's 2.5 gallons left. However, the car will stall when there's only 0.5 gal left - happened twice. When the light comes on, don't drive more than 10-15 miles or you'll need some walking to the gas station!

Speaking about Low gas and LIGHT..
last week, I barely made it home with my gas
light on. So I parked it.. and Been a week
since I tried to start her up to fill her UP.
BUT LOW and BEHOLD
During start up. the car idled funny and then died.
Then tried to start her c ouple more times
Would fire up then die.. Then I started
hitting the gas after the initial start up
and it DIED.. Since then. IT wo'nt even
fire up.. I SUSPECTING the engine not getting
any FUEL.. HOPEFULLY..
I hope i didn't damange anything Or foul the plubs..
WISH me LUCK
