Anybody have a problem with the gas door not opening?

I'm trying to fill up gas for the RX-7 to start it up (It's been sitting on jack stands for 1/2 year).

But, my gas door is not opening. I pushed on the gas lever sideways and I don't hear anything. It appears as if the gas door opener and trunk opener share the same cable? Has anybody run into this problem?

The trunk release and the gas door release do share the same cable. I had trouble with my gas door too, but it wasn't because of the cable. The previous owner had broken the door hinge and then epoxied it back together & the door was not in alignment. I did replace the cable though because I thought that was the initial problem, but yes the trunk & gas door release share the same cable.

try pushing down on the gas door lever, while having someone else (or you if you have long reach) pry open the gas door. If it opens now, then the small tab that acts as a spring to push open your gas door is bent out of shape. You only have to re-bend the tab to make it work again.

hope this helps.

Yea, as stated above you don't just press sideways. You press sideways, then down.

Many people experience a failure of the gas door release mechanism over the years. This is either due to the release pin sticking or breaking off entirely. In the former case, you can just lube the pin and hope it continues to work. In the latter case you'll have to replace the entire cable assembly. It's relatively inexpensive from Malloy ($55 maybe?) but you do have to take out a lot of interior plastic on the driver's side and trunk area which is a lot of work

I had that issue for quite a while.

What I did was just get two small springs.
Most home improvement stores have a box with different spring varieties for a couple of bucks.

Then I found two identical springs and attached them where the rubber stoppers would mount on the car.

It works great. Closes nice and tight, clean and flush. And it opens really well by the springs pushing the door open.

Give it a try.

Also, get some graphite and try to clean and lube up the pin latch. After some time they get a little sticky.
