Any reason to hand carry parts from Japan?

I'm being sent to Tokyo and while I've been before, I've never thought about parts shopping while I was there. Is there any reason to do so? Or do I just get nailed for VAT or duties at customs?

Can't you mark the value way down so even if you have to pay duty fees it won't be that much?
