any benifit for extenal wastegate?

i have one now that just vents to atmosphere and is loud as hell when on boost. Any benifit to having it open rather than plumbed back into the DP.

less restriction maybe?

I think the only reason to not have it back in the exhaust is for the noise.

If you plumb it back in with a nice smooth transition down by the end of the downpipe you shouldn't suffer much/any power loss. You should avoid plumbing it back in at 90* to the downpipe and keep it as far away from the turbo as you practically can.

He's right, if you plumb it to close to the turbo and/ or at a 90* angle into the downpipe you will create turbulance increasing spool-up time.

Drag cars almost always have a WG dump pipe seperate from the DP. Even if it's a small gain I think removing that little bit of turbulance from the exhaust helps the performance.

do you have to weld it on both sides or can you just weld it to the DP and clamp it to the Waste gate?

If you use a v-band style wastegate there is no reason why you can use a v-band, they are just more expensive. The tial 44 mm comes in V-band I think. If you wanna spend the money on it, V-band everything, it makes R & R a sinch.

Well if you mean any advantage of an external vs. internal wastegate, the internals are a flow restriction, so getting a turbo w/ an external wastegate is better for performance.

i dumped to atmosphere and it sounded like a race car...BWAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!

really obnoxious if you live in the city.

performance loss is minimal...but its enough for the racers to not vent to exhaust.

I actually didnt like the sound...so i had steve put it back thru exhaust

External wastegates eliminate the chances of boost spiking or creeping if installed properly. Some, (NOT ALL) internal wastegates have this problem, but some do mainly because of larger exhausts and the more free flow. The internal flapper cant close as easy to regulate boost. This can also be helped alot with a boost controller.

Two different concepts are being discussed here:
1. Internal versus external wastgates
2. Dumping the wastegate to atmosphere versus plumbing it back into the exhaust
