Think i burned out starter/solinoid ,when car flooded.And i was stuck with no tools to de-flood at the time.[at the side of the road]

Tested the following today,

-Checked bat

-Shorted accross 2 big posts,motor sounded healthy [no grinding]

-Heavy braided post on the right has 12v,but dident hear a clunk when my helper turned to start position.

-Disconnected ign spade connection ,helper turned to start possition for 5 sec and voltmeter read 9,10,11 volts.just about hit 12v.

So i think the ign switch is fine ,starters fine and solinoids toast.

my question is have i missed anything and does anyone no where i can get a solinoid shiped to ireland?
Everywhere i look is either just to the states or is sellin the full starter

car...13b ` 92 jdm. apex filters,cat back jasma exhaust,stock ecu.

You need at least 1 more test to confirm bad solenoid:

Ignition on, jump 12 V to starter spade connection, and see if starter/solenoid work. If not, then bad solenoid. If it does, then there is some other problem.

the reason I suggest this is because of the slow rise of voltage at the spade terminal you mentioned.

 

Thanks for the reply,so cross a screw driver cross left big post and spade connection and listen for "clunk".
Oh and any chance u no for anywhere the ships internationaly,if i need the solinoid and for future parts?

headin out to test solinoid now.

 

Ok so jumped the left post [ from bat] to spade connection and got the same result as jumpin the 2 big posts .IE motor span over but dident crank.
Also dident really here a "clunk".
Dont think pinion gear is engaging flywheel.
So is solinoid[hold in, pull in] toast or maybe ive missed something?

Well, if I am understanding correctly, the solenoid is not causing the pinion to engage the flywheel, but IS making electrical contact and causing the starter-motor to run. This may indicate the the pinion teeth are gone, or some other problem, since it sounds like the solenoid is moving. If it did not, the electrical contacts wouldn't engage and cause the starter motor to spin.

Ok so took starter out eariler.took pics but cant figure out how to post them..

Pinion teeth were fine,no corrosion on connections and no burnt smell.
Did "pull in test" to verify pinion movement ,motor span over ok but no movement from pinion.
Also took cap off starter to visually check condition of brush,armiture,and terminal m connection seem fine too.

OK, another guess. Something is shorting out the solenoid windings (keeping it from moving to engage the flywheel) and at the same time, passing the voltage on to the starter motor so that it spins.

So, maybe something melted or broke inside the solenoid.

got a price for starter $109 but shipping is $80 lol..trying to see if he sells just the solinoid.
