Another question for the transmission guys!!
ok a few weeks back, i runied my 5th gear synchro by missing 3rd.....the usual. so I ordered a new synchro and hub assemby, locknuts, snap rings, etc. I took it all apart and found that the teeth on the synchro were worn but still there. the teeth on the collar part of the hub were basically gone. SO, I figured that by replacing those two things I would be back in business. That is not the case, it still grinds in 5th, it's better but it is still bad. I am 99.9% sure that everything is back together correctly (I used the shop manual and labeled everything). One thing that I didn't inspect very closely is the cone area on the gear. Is it likely that this is worn too much? i looked at it quickly and it didn't look abnormal. Does anyone have any suggestions? I want to be as certain as possible that I know what the problem is if/when i decide to tear into it again.
Thanks

How is your reverse and how is 1st gear. Can you downshift to 1st while rolling? Can you easily shift into reverse, or does it stick? What condition is your clutch?

When your 5th gear synco goes the teath will be fine. What happends is the syncro has a hair like crack or break it in somewhere that when pressure is applied to it the break opens up and makes the syncro flex around which keeps 5th from going into place.
Here is the way to test for it.....when you go back in pull the old syncro out and drop it on the ground. If it rings its good if it make a dud broke kinda sound its bad. I ALMOST did the same thing as you till I found this out then tested it. Sure enough it was bad and apon real close inspection i found a crack that would open up if I pulled on they syncro from both sides real hard.
Anyway, I'm sure thats your prob

Yes, I put a NEW synchro and hub assembly in. All the other gears shift fine.
if I had to guess what was wrong, i'd say that the cone on the gear was worn, but i wanted to know if there was anything else that might be bad. Seems unlikely to me that the relativelty soft brass(?) synchro would wear on the cone.
Thanks for your help so far.

Hey I have a question for you. I just got done with mine and havent had time to put the shifter back in yet. I still have the trans on the workbench, if I install the shifter and go thru all the gears including 5th does that mean its ok or does it need to be in the car and driving to really tell if its still messed up.
I guess if its sitting on the bench and I go thru the gears taht really wont tell me anything because nothing inside is turning.
I just hate to reinstall the trans and have to pull it all over again if its not working right.
Damn, now you've got me nervous haha

SPOautos: How tough was it to get the tranny out? What tools/equipment did you need? My 5th gear synchro just got hosed last weekend, so I'm going to get a move-on to get it fixed. If I can do it myself, that'd be cool, but I'm not sure I have the right stuff.

So I'm assuming the tranny come out without pulling the engine??
I have the same problem...what are the basic parts that I will most likely have to replace?? I've only ground 5th gear (by shifting into it) about 5 times...
Thanks,
Kyle

kkekeisen: no you don't need to pull the motor to pull the transmission
And
cym tkt: he means when you are going about 10 mph can you put the car back into first if you had it in another gear and had to stop because of traffic. I have the 5th gear problem and my car gives me a lot of problem getting back into first at anything over 5mph it just won't let it go in. So I have to put it in second and the car kind of stalls untill I get to a higher speed.
my problems: My 5th gear synchro was said to have been fixed by mazda already and 2 weeks after I bought the car it happened again. What is the deal did they not replace everything or did they do something wrong? So I have a hard time getting it back into 1st. Second gear always feels weird like it is hard to get it in but it always goes in it just doesn't feel like it fits but no grinding. 5th gear grinds almost every time unless I accelerate through all of the gears and then try to put it into 5th quickly or rev it up and then put it into 5th in slow motion while the rpms are coming down and wiggle it in.
I want to replace everything that can wear out on my transmission soon. Every part that even maybe should be replaced. Basically a total rebuild and more I want it to be better than new! Can somebody list all of the parts and part numbers that I need and where the cheapest place to get all of these parts is?
Thanks Guys

I don't think there is any synchronizer for first gear so you'll need to double clutch to get into first on the roll. Even then its kind of hard to do. I can't just shift into first on a roll and my 5th gear and reverse gear are perfect.

ok, it really wasn't THAT much money, but I spent close to $200 but that was only for various snap rings, lock nuts, synchros, shift select spindle and a 5th gear hub assembly. i would bet that those were less than 5% of the parts in there. so I would estimate that for a MERE $4000 and some elbow grease, you could have a transmission full of new parts.
