You can use a piston compression checker but it's kinda difficult. The proper compression tester is rather expensive from what i have heard.

Go to the 5th post down. Then you will get an idea of the price range for them.

should I be the first to say, you should do a search? But anyway the right way to do a compresion test on a rotary is with the electronic one that they have at mazda or mabe a rotary shop near you might have one. If You really whant to do it your self, you will need to get compresion tester with a pressure gauge, and don't foget to take out the check valve so that the needle will look like it bounces. I t is hard to do by your self, if not impossible. what your looking for is more of a consistancy on the moving needle, the pressure it should reed on a normal gauge is betwwen 80 and 100 psi. Also don't foget to take some fuses out, you dont whant to have your car start during the test. i.e. fuel ignition. maybe someone else can fill in what I have forgot or have wrong.
