troubleshoot me this - cold start runs rich

Anyone got any leads on this one/can identify the issue...

93 FD (JDM) runs like **** when engine is cold - started with a slightly louder exhaust note and rapid backfire on deceleration, has now degenerated to a rough idle, black smoke, noisy exhaust, noisy engine, more backfires.

Once she heats up (about 4-5 minutes) runs like a dream - all symptoms disappear. Boost and power are perfect.

Swapped out the plugs - but problem only got worse.

Any ideas??

no ideas? too hard?

it's a strange issue - as, while don't have the ability to test the a/f ratios - it isn't obviously running rich when warmed-up. ie: lots of smoke when cold - not even a puff of the black stuff under WOT

Do you have a stock computer or a PFC??? I had the same problem with my PFC but I fixed it with some fuel corrections.

If you run the Power FC, there is an engine fuel enrichment setting that multiplies your base map by 1.XX to intentionally run the car rich. This way, it will make your car warm up faster and make it run a little smoother upon startup.

no, stock ecu (as far as I've ever been able to tell - definitely not pfc, anyway).

they're ringing mazda japan tomorrow, but I'd really appreciate a few tips anyway, if anyone has any idea what sort of part failure, etc, would cause this

At cold start your engine is supposed to run rich. The engine coolant temp sensor has "high authority" & when it says "cold", it tells the computer to give the car more fuel. One possibility is the coolant sensor is not reacting, not backing down on enrichment as the car warms up.

When the car fully warms up, the O2 sensor has gotten hot enough to work, and the car goes into closed loop with the O2 sensor running the show. Until that happens, your coolant temp sensor and your throttle position sensor are the major players.
