Question Another oil leak post.

I just bought a 94 FD with a newly rebuilt street ported engine(<10k miles), new downpipe, rad, rad hoses, Blitz BOV. When I first saw the car, it was kinda dark, but I did the best inspection I could. Took her for a short test drive, everything seemed fine(no boost gauge but I think I could hear the secondary turbo comming online at around 4k rpm). Drove back to the parking lot and parked in a different spot. I looked where the car was parked before and found a small oil spot. So I waited a while 20-30 minutes, looked under the car and it was fine. Get the car home let it sit over night and I find a good size oil spot under the car. I look at the turbo side of the engine, looks pretty good. On the opposite side, I can see oil on the crossmember under the engine. I can't quite tell where exactly it's comming from. The upper side of the engine is dirty and a bit oily(kinda covered with dust and dirt). I'm thinking it's the OMP or the oil pan that's leaking. When I left Memphis the dipstick was at 3/4 full, so I added a few ounces of oil. When I checked the dipstick after discovering the leak, it was just under 1/2 of XX'd part of the dipstick(after 1000 miles of driving). When I start the car, it jumps to around 2.7k rpm then down to 1.2k rpm. There's no smoke at startup, but if I stick my hand in front of the exhaust pipe, I'll get several black liquid specks on my hand. Is this oil? Should I be worried about this??? I don't smell any fuel in the engine bay, but it exhaust does smell like the engine is running a bit rich. I think the muffler is a GReddy.
I did a search on oil leaks, and from the looks of the engine, it may be the OMP/oil filter/oil filler neck. But I really concerned about the stuff comming out of the exhaust. Are the black liquid specs normal, or do I have oil leaking from the turbos? Thanks!

Well number one the omp is on the same side as the turbos right in front so if thats dry move onto something else. These motors are prone to leaking oil from the oil pan. The motor mounts go through the pan and the flex form engine torque makes the pan leak. I think you might have a mixture of the rear oil pan leaking and the guy you bought if from might have spilled some oil topping it off.
As for the liquid from the exhaust, I've got no idea what that could be...maybe condensation mixed in with carbon???
Rotaries will burn oil just from regular driving, plus you might be leaking a bit so dont worry about that too much just keep an eye on the level. Dont let it get too low, thats all.
Everything else sounds normal. it revs to about 3k upon start up and goes down to normal idle rpms within a few seconds.
get a boost gauge and make sure you got the 10-8-10 pattern and a H2O temp gauge also!

Thanks! I knew where the OMP was, but I wasn't sure where exactly the lines went. I also need to get a new oil pressure gauge. My current gauge gives me either has pressure or has no pressure when the car is running. Are there any recommended oil, boost and water temp gauges?

the stock oil pressure gauge is junk...well actually the sender is what craps out. If you want call Malloy and get a sender unit, theyre about $80...
As for gauges, depends on what you like...i have a auto meter boost gauge and to be honest i couldnt tell you if its accurate or not. Also have HKS gauges and although they cost more i really dont see much of a difference other than looks. I use the Power FC commander for monitoring anyways so if youre planning on getting one just go with a cheap gauge for the time being.

alright, maybe I can chime in. He is right the OMP is on the turbo side right under the lower radiator hose neck. I would degrease everything and you will find out where its coming from. I will tell you that mine was leaking pretty good, it turned out to be a bad mount on the passenger side, bolts go right through the pan to the block. They are a weak point for leaks. I also found my leak to becoming from the pan(nice gunk all the way around the pan lip), especially from where the pan meets the tranny and engine(underneath tranny 2 engine seal).Once you do that, you will know where to go from there. You are probably going to have to get under there and reseal the pan and check the mounts. You need help PM me. I removed mine without dropping the subframe and installed new mounts with a Gotham oil pan brace, sealed it up good, extra Right Stuff on there. I put Mobil 1 synthetic in and no leaks what so ever. I also got rid of major torque twist (main culprit). As far as the exhaust spitting carbon, mine has done it from day one, I would not be concerned. Paranoia. Good luck.

Thanks dude! My plan today was to register the car with the city, then go pick up some Ames Power Foam to clean off the engine and try to locate the source of the leak. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks again!!!!
