Another Mod from the Garage..

Just as every inch matters, so does every ounce. Horsepower to Weight ratio is the end result for the means.

Now from the Garage a hood prop that weighs half of the stock rod.

Aluminum top
Stock bottom

Nice-looking hood prop, how did you make it? Is it a carefully-bent aluminum rod, or something more complex? How much weight did you save, and what did it cost you?

Very nice, I wish I would have thought of that when I was having trouble fitting my v-mount.
How hard was it to bend the rod and what did you use to bend it? any heating involved?

I like it alot. If you have the skills and can get the aluminum cheap and do it yourself, so what if it takes a while. The RX7 is a time consuming hobby in itself. No different then a high maintainance girl that costs you alot, sometimes only gives you quickies or doesn't work/give at all but then when you take her out and show her off then get the high speed all nighter ...its priceless!

3ft of 1/4" aluminum round bar about $1.50 + 1 hour - WORTH IT that looks better than the stock one.

Ha ha seriously, I have to use a towel to open the hood after driving durring hot days.

Looks like youve been hard at work with the DIY lately Tom. Real nice results on all your items including the braces.

It won't weigh 1/2 as much when you put the rubber rings on it

Looks nice, but a bit of overkill I think

Ha, Ha, I just gotta laugh at some of those responses out there. Hell no I did not buy that already made like that, I made it in my Garage hence "from the Garage" - get it ? There was a lot of you here that saw that, few others didn't. Let me answer all the questions....Cost was @$5 bucks ( close Kinetik ). Time = 20min. Material - 3/8" solid aluminum rod - Where to get - Lowes, - How to make - use a vice and a light touch from the torch on the end bends, Can it be polished - yes it will be, Lightweight - you bet, - Would I make another - maybe/if time allows...was it enjoyable - priceless.

I love to think and fabricate, think and fab. Doing it myself gives me a challange. I've done this for years. Why am I sharing - so to inspire all you other folks that you can do it to, and there are a lot of folks out there that have done things like this in the past. It enjoyable. I'm approaching 50 now, but you younger folks who read these forums, I would like see gain ideas also and do things themselves a lot more instead of asking for someone to always show you. Read, think, do it, learn.

Be on the lookout for the next " from the Garage" project and thanks Kinetik,mibad,level7,poss,lupe,bottlefed,goracer and goodfella

Now, talking about my rod, show me that one babe again with her hand down her britches

Very creative and matches jack kit but I wonder if it will eventualy bend and maybe that is why Mazda used steel.

Opps, I didnt finish my post up there. If i do change the hood props, they will be hydraulic, but I love to see creative work like this.

Looks perfect and I can't wait to see it all polished.

Two thumbs up for craftsmanship!

Did you weigh the old rod vs. the new one?
