Alternator REALLY hot...

Ok I just had a tuner check out my microtech the other day and he told me I need new trailing coils... On the way home the car starts to die electrically to the point where I had to use the Ebrake to not put on my brakelights. Had to turn off my profecB, radar, twin power, etc to be safe.

Now Ive had the car taken apart for the past week to get my coils put in. I finished it up, unplugged the fuel pump and turned the key forward to charge the coils. After 3-4 minutes I started it up. Only 2 minutes later and the alternator is HOT, the engine not even on the bottom line of the coolant temp guage.

Voltage 13.5.

I have a spare but I was curious of your opinions on this...

I tried a search, but didnt see any good hits.

...sorry to bring the thread back from the dead, but I have this problem also.
How hot is an alternator supposed to get? Even after i turn the car off for an hour, the alternator is still too hot to touch.

the alternator should not get much hotter than the other components in the engine bay. all alternators have impellers installed on the rotor inorder to pump air through them. heat is produced by electric resistance. this indicates a bad connection, probably a bad ground. check the resistance between the alternator body and the negative terminal of the battery. should be at the very most an ohm. if its more than that than there is a bad ground between the engine and the body
