Alternator Question regarding charge voltage...

My understanding is that the alternator has a built in voltage regular which will keep the voltage around 12vdc to charge the battery.... now, if this regular decides to take a dump... it can go either way correct?

For instance.... my voltage reading on my PFC is 14.8-15.2V when I am running. If I disconnect the battery... the car works just fine...

Now on the other hand... my dry cell battery smelt like a damned stink bomb (sulfer) so it was overcharging it....

I suppose I should just replace the alternator, wanted to see if anyone else had a problem like this where their alternator was overcharging the battery...

Thanks,
-Darren-

That sounds like a bad voltage regulator.

Used alternators are fairly cheap and reliable, I'd go that route.
