Alternator Plug -- what if it breaks?
I think I understand that the wiring harness connection to the alternator only impacts the Alternator below 3000rpm.
My question is if the plug is unplugged will the alternator still charge, but only when above 3000rpm?
Reason I'm asking is the plug doesn't really "snap" into the alternator and I'm thinking it might not be making a solid connection, at least not all of the time.
thanks for any insights

they never really snapped in, they always have a bit of a loose feel to them. so long as it is not corroded at either end i wouldn't worry about it.
the alternator will self excite above 3k so yes, it will still work even if the connection at the 2 prong plug is bad.

fairly sure the series 5 FC has the same alternator plug as well, if you see any at the wreckers. i have not physically tried to see if they interchange though.
edit: just checked with some spare plugs i had and they do fit between series 5 and FD.

that could be a bad alternator or more commonly a corroded or loose contact on the charge post on the back of the alternator to charge wire.
With the alternator harness plug unplugged, still seeing 14+ volts at idle.
I thought that the alternator Only self energized above 3000 rpm. Just curious if something
is wrong.
thanks
